Friend wanting to divorce, worried about kids

Friend has 3 small children, aged 5, 3 and 9 months. Her partner has always had anger issues which have been exacerbated by having young children. He is verbally abusive to them, calling the middle child a fucking dick and the baby a twat. He loses his patience with them really quickly and my friend is worried about something happening.
my friend has tried to talk to him many times and he always get defensive about his behaviour. She wants to leave but is worried about having to leave her children with him if he got joint custody. Has anyone got any advice? How can she go for full custody and how much weight would verbal abuse have in a custody battle?

The verbal abuse would have a lot of weight , and the kids will do far better having at least most of their time away from their Dad.

Women’s aid is a really good place to go for advice on how to leave safety
