Toxic parents

Hi all,

I'm just hoping someone could point me in the direction of some good books or websites to try and get my head around my relationship with my mum.

There was lots of gaslighting and coercion and emotional manipulation as well as dependency of me as the child to be the adult.

Now I'm an adult though there is lots of generosity, albeit mostly financial, and I'm just struggling to understand how a parent can seem to loving and caring but also be quite cruel and vindictive.

Thank you.

Hi all, we have our doubts about the OP so we've taken this down. Apologies to those who offered advice in good faith.

I was in counselling for over a year not so long ago. I'm hoping to go back but my counsellor is on sabbatical 😫. I'm hoping to try and muddle through until she's back rather than start over with someone new.

I'm sorry you've been through it too. It's so mindbending; I just can't imagine treating my own children that way.

I found Toxic Parents by Susan Forward a useful book

It is so upsetting and therapy is the only way to work through the trauma of it I think.

I'm sorry this happened to you.

The Stately Homes threads on here are also fantastic for support.

Thank you all.

I've peeked at Stately Home as while ago but I'll go back.

I'll get that book on Kindle. Thanks again. :)
