What are your experiences of depo provera?

I finally went for my smear this week, and when I told the nurse about my heavy painful periods which are coming every 3 weeks, she suggested depo provera, but I wasn't very good on the pill, my pmt got worse, so wonder how i'd be on this.

Just wondered how anyone else "gets on" with ths.

DONT DO IT!!!

type depo provera horror stories into google and see what it can do to you.

i was on it for a year and it destroyed my sex drive totally, gave me horrendous mood swings, made me really fat even though i was eating the same amount before i went on it and it was so hard to shift, it just made me feel crap.

the only plus was that it stopped my periods so i didn't have to suffer crippling period pain for a year.

also it took about a year to get my fertility back which is very frustrating when you are trying for a baby.

please research it properly before you go on it.

BTW, i read that they give perverts depo in the states as a kind of chemical castration, might not be true but from what it did to me i wouldn't be surprised.

Flier · 16/01/2008 10:46

my first instinct is not to go on it anyway, but i will google and look at the stories.

thanks

I had the implant rather than the injection (plus: isthat they can take it out, minus is that they have time to put it in, but are "TOO busy to take it out")

I HATED it, I also suffer from bad PMT and felt like I constantly had depression, it was very scary!!

donbean · 16/01/2008 10:46

Me too...dont do it.
I was on it for about 7 years, no periods, no mood swings, no PMT BUT
Loads of fertility problems after i came off it.
Depression while on it.....NEVER in my life have i suffered from depression but my God it was like a sledge hammer. Kept saying to the nurse,, "is this a side effect of the injection?" she kept saying "oh no".
I got hold of the literiture in the box and it advises that it should not be given to any one with a history of depression as a major side effect is .....DEPRESSION.

A pal of mine suffered from fits which again is a side effect, never had one since coming off it.

Fertility problems were a real worry and 2 MC i blame on the injection.
Not good.
What about the implant?
You can have it wipped out if it doesnt suit you, or the miriana coil meant to be very good.

Flier · 16/01/2008 10:47

I've only heard bad things about the coil, so am put off that too.

well done for the smear by the way. good on you,
i have to absolutely MAKE myself go, horrid horrid horrid.

candypandy · 16/01/2008 10:51

weight gain.. feeling bloated..

Carnival · 16/01/2008 10:52

Weight gain and a long wait for periods to reappear when I stopped, when they did there was no pattern for years.

I wouldn't have it again.

MightySquonk · 16/01/2008 10:53

massive weight gain.

Came off it last August, still no period, still fat (and possibly still getting fatter - not sure)

No PMT though

Flier · 16/01/2008 10:53

thanks. I put mine off for about a year .

But, I have to say that it was absolutely fine, the nurse was lovely, we chatted for ages beforehand, and it wasn't even uncomfortable!

I must have had a bad experience with one when younger, I think. The nurse used a plastic speculum and warmed it up beforehand, and she didn't use load of ky jelly either! Much better than the old metal speculum I must say.

So go on, get your appointment booked mrs!

Instant weight gain. Honestly, I think I walked out of the doctor's a full size bigger than I walked in.

MAMAZON · 16/01/2008 11:25

no periods (great)
massive weight gain (not so great)
very low sex drive (depends on how great the sex was)
mood swings and just general feeling of crapness (deffo not great)

other than yeah it was good at not getting me preggers.

MightySquonk · 16/01/2008 11:45

aaaah, so that's why I've got a ridiculously low sex drive, is it? Thought I'd just gone off him

MAMAZON · 16/01/2008 11:47

seriously i went from rampant sex godess to not wanting to even think of sex.

it was soo not good.

cerys · 16/01/2008 11:49

weight gain, no sex drive, mood swings and boils! Nice.

MightySquonk · 16/01/2008 11:51

seriously, I thought I was just tired and fat, and used to him. Never put it down to the depo (although I did think that maybe I wasn't feeling very sexy as I was so bloody FAT!)

MAMAZON · 16/01/2008 11:52

actually i thought the same thing.

but within a month of coming off the depo i was horney as hell again. (and still as fat)

MightySquonk · 16/01/2008 11:57

aah, have been off depo for six months and am still not feeling particularly horny. So perhaps I really have gone off him...

bubblagirl · 16/01/2008 11:57

i also had terrible periods and was put on depo worked great until body started rejecting it

i am now happily on cerrazzette also stops you bleeding 1 tablet every day no breaks and feel great

body did start rejecting so had to up to 2 pills a day suffered terrible for years depo and cerrazzette were the only things that worked and because no operiods felt so much better

didnt kill my sex drive maybe because it correctefd my hormone balance

Something is causing your heavy and painful periods and it is certainly in your interests to find out what it is. Fibroids is one possibility in this regard, endometriosis is another.

Would therefore request your GP to get you a gynae referral instead of Depo. Depo is not going to address WHY this is happening.
