For those of you who have had tech experience with cheaters, does anyone know how an SMS could have been sent from my phone without me doing it? The phone was in a locked parked car at the time the message was sent and nobody else could have got into the car. TIA.

A cloned phone

mawofone · 23/06/2022 13:54

I have accidentally sent text messages via my Apple Watch without knowing until people have responded. However, they were just generic messages like "I'll be back soon", nothing specific.

Shitscared123 · 23/06/2022 13:55

Spyware? Shared account eg Apple ID?

Tryingtogetto · 23/06/2022 13:58

I tried searching info about cloning and don't really understand it but seems to be that whoever clones it would need the device? I never leave my phone anywhere. DH is not tech savvy and nobody else in the house at night.

He might not be tech savvy but he may have asked someone how to access your phone, download spyware etc.

Do you have an Apple account as messages can be sent from any device if set up?

LIZS · 23/06/2022 14:24

Is it an imessage? If so could be sent from ipad etc

gogogadgetgo · 23/06/2022 14:28

Yeah if it's Apple I can send messages from my watch, laptop and iPad. It's all linked.

theotheralf · 23/06/2022 14:30

a number of apps have desktop versions like whatsapp.webmail can be accessed from anywhere.if the sender has your login details they can use any phone with the relevant app ? nothing is tied to the actual phone except what is stored internally - photos, maybe contacts ?

Who else has keys to your car? Do you know that no one could have picked up and used your car keys? How is your phone locked - my code or fingerprint or not at all? How do you know an SMS has been sent - are you looking in the sent folder on your phone - have you looked at the date and time it was sent? What is the nature of the text? My wife sometimes scrolls around the texts on her phone and says she hasn't seen a particular text before thinking it is a new text and it is actually a very old one. I have a Dell laptop that is linked to my phone via "Dell Mobile Connect" - someone could have linked your phone to a laptop - I get notifications pop up on my laptop that are actually notifications for things sent to my phone. I can send texts from my laptop via my phone. See the big blue button top left "New Message"

same is true for mumsnet whether app or web based

Tryingtogetto · 23/06/2022 14:43

This is so confusing but thanks for suggestions. Trying to go through it logically nobody could have got into the car. Yes there's another key but I leave it at home.
The first I knew about the message was when I saw the notification on my phone. I thought I had received a message but then realised it was a SMS (green) sent to my landline.
I didn't know about the apple ID thing. This is the most likely. That someone has an old device of mine logged in.
The message said they had my phone.
If I change the password on my ID will that log them out?

Not sure changing the password works immediately. You may be able to change it then log out all devices though. Does anyone share your apple account?

gogogadgetgo · 23/06/2022 15:04

If I go into my Apple ID on my phone it tells me all the things linked in. Including my old phone which I obviously haven't used for years.
If you click on them you can 'remove from account'
So maybe do that and then change the password

bathsh3ba · 23/06/2022 17:12

There are various websites where if you pay you can send a message that looks as if it comes from a specific number. That's the simplest answer.

happinessischocolate · 23/06/2022 17:16

Have you lost a previous phone?

I put my sim in my new phone and Bluetoothed everything over, but my old phone still works despite saying "no sim" I can't make calls but I can FaceTime and iMessage from it and it shows all calls and messages received

Shitscared123 · 23/06/2022 22:44

You can check all devices you are logged into.

Vapinginbed · 23/06/2022 23:19

You can use a mobile marketing platform and pop your number in as the ‘sender name’ and send a message that way. I used to do this as a job.

Waterlemon · 23/06/2022 23:27

Who was the message sent to?
how do you know they got a message?
Did someone show you a screenshot or their phone with a message from you? -
could someone have faked a message?
