Funeral

A friend has a father who was a drunk and violent to her mother. The mother then kicked the father out. He then got into drugs in a big way.

My friend is an only child. She lost contact with her father many years ago. He stayed single and apparently
lives in (almost) squalor now!

As an only child, would she be expected to pay for his funeral?

I don't think next of kin are obliged to pay for anyone's funeral.

He would be given a paupers funeral -

No, of course not.

No, his estate would pay for the funeral. I’m a only child and I didn’t pay for my dad’s funeral. If there isn’t enough money in the estate to pay debts, then I think they just don’t get paid unfortunately.

Thanks.

He doesn't have an estate. He lives in a LA flat with hardly any belongings (he's sold them all for drugs).

My friend was concerned she'd have to pay as his next of kin!
