How to help boyfriend through this

My boyfriend’s dad has suffered from ill health for 20+ years. In the last 3-4 years, he has deteriorated. Unfortunately the family received bad news that his cancer has spread and he doesn’t have long to live.

I’ve never lost anyone close to me so I feel like I can’t relate to what he is going through. He has never lost family members (other than grandparents when he was young). My heart breaks for him, I really want to be there and support him through this. I’m an empath and usually know the right things to say, but with this I don’t because I have never been in his position.

Can anyone please give me some advice on how to help support him?

I think all you can do is be there, be kind and listen when he needs to talk. Macmillan has a support phone line and online forum, so you can get help when you need it. Perhaps pass those details to your boyfriend, as well?
