Is it ok to just say hello to an ex if you see him and then walk on?

We broke up a year ago and I don't want anything to do with him after the cold and callous way he ended a 5 year relationship. Unfortunately, we are likely to bump into each other as I now have connections to the small village where he's living. I really don't want to speak to him so have in mind that I'll just give him a brief 'hi' and then continue on. How does everyone else deal with this happening?

That sounds like a perfectly fine response to bumping into them. Especially due to the way things ended. Very dignified.

A flat yet cordial "Hello" and you keep on walking.

Very occasionally I see an ex I was with as a teenager. We don't stop and chat but we always say hello. We just outgrew each other and there were no hard feelings. However, I blank other exes who I feel treated me badly as I've got no desire to talk to them or be nice to them. I just walk past and don't look at them, there's no point.

I think after a year of being split up and you’re already stressing about what happens if and when you see him and how to react would indicate you are no where near over him and that’s the thing I think I’d focus on.

There are no rules. What feels 'ok' to you is what's ok.

I always see mine at weddings, which there have been a hell of a lot of lately 😳
We have mutual friends. I'm married now and couldn't care less about him but it really irritates me that he tries to strike up conversation.

My go-to is "Hi" as I'm walking past, he often pauses and says "how's things", I glance backwards slightly and say "all good, thank you" with a smile - whilst continuing to walk away.

Not sure how long it will take him to grasp that I don't want to stop and chat but we are on attempt number #7 so far.

Whatever feels right to you OP.

I think your response sounds perfect. Its only awkward if you allow it to be.
