.. but ladies.. what on earth is a "cocklodger"?

It’s used to refer to a man who moves in with a woman and then mooches off her without contributing financially.

I don’t know where it came from, but it doesn’t really make sense. In virtually none of the situations where it’s used on MN is the poster exchanging lodgings in return for some great sex and companionship - which she might see as a fair exchange. She’s almost invariably just in a shit relationship.

A man (manchild) who expects to do little / contribute little but have all the benefits of a relationship.

Often someone who won't work despite being able to, doesn't contribute to the bills (or contributes very little), often doesn't pull his weight around the house, wants a mum not a partner. Lazy and immature.

@ComtesseDeSpair I think that's how it starts, though - she's being shagged stupid and doesn't realise he's got his feet under the table, as my mum would say!

Because if he'd said on the first date, "Can I move in? I won't pay any bills, do any housework, do any DIY or help take care of the kids, but I just want to live somewhere for free and have the odd shag - how about it?" then she might have refused.

They've usually come straight from another relationship or from their mum's house. One thing that's quite remarkable is the speed with which this type of person moves when he wants to - most people have to sell their house or give notice to their landlady - the cocklodger has none of those concerns.

I'd love to see David Attenborough do a programme on cocklodgers!

Why OP do you need some where to live?

Low self esteem, low expectations in a relationship and a few kind words form the CL or hobosexual. I do hope hobosexual catches on @lilkiki.

I love hobosexual. Cocklodgers must be on the rise (excuse the pun) at the moment...in times of escalating rent, fuel and food prices, they must be doing a Paul Young special at epidemic rates...laying hats all over the nation. On the prowl for the next financially independent woman who has the love bug, or low self esteem and tolerates their fecklessness and scrounging in return for the dubious accolade of not being labelled 'single'...that frightful slur up there with crazy cat lady, on the shelf, spinster, saddo and other sanctions applied by modern society when they don't understand that some women don't want it all, but they do want someone who pays their share of the bills.
