Dating dress code

I've not been on a date for more than 20yrs and don't really know how it works any more. I don't mind getting glammed up for a big night out, but I'm very much a casual dresser otherwise. So if you're meeting someone for a first date/coffee through O.L.D., is it ok to turn up in jeans and a cardigan?

Wear what makes you feel good and confident.

What would be the point of dressing in a way that's not your usual style?

EBearhug · 20/03/2022 10:16

Depends partly what you're doing - pub, country walk. I'd dress for the occasion in that sense, but I'd still be in my own style. I need to feel comfortable in myself on a date.

First impressions count.
I would wear a dress in a nice colour with the cardigan.
Good luck!

I’m a jeans person, so I’d wear jeans Smile

CloseYourEyesAndSee · 20/03/2022 10:31

I wouldn't wear anything too casual like a cosy cardigan or a hoodie but a nice cardigan with a nice top could be fine. You want to give the impression you made an effort though no need for full slap and heels!

gingerhills · 20/03/2022 10:46

Really depends. There's a world of difference between well fitting jeans and a chic, silky, draped cardigan, and some battered old jeans with a cosy old knit that you chuck on to avoid turning the heating up. There's an art to making an effort while looking casually dressed.

NeedleNoodle3 · 20/03/2022 11:00

I’d wear the same as if I was meeting a friend for whatever activity it is.

Pretty much this.

My default would be: black (probably floral) wrap dress, black tights, DMs, cardigan. Light make up. Hair loose and curly.

This. I make as much effort for my friends as I do for dates, and being comfortable is a priority for me.

It depends on where the date is, but if it's just meeting up for a coffee then it's totally fine to dress casual.

Hopefullyoneday12 · 20/03/2022 17:29

Jeans fine. Lose the cardigan.

SheWoreYellow · 22/03/2022 12:24

Did you have the date yet? I hope it went well.
