Narcissist parent shouting in the background when I'm in work meetings on Teams

I was in a meeting with a few colleagues, including my manager. My narcissistic parent starts shouting to me in the background and then shouting at other family members. I had to keep going on and off mute, but I was supposed to be talking so I had to stay off mute and try and talk over it all.

I'm so embarrassed. They knew I was in a meeting as I told them beforehand

My manager hasn't said anything yet but I think it's pretty likely that they heard at least some of it :(

I would try to sit in a room with a closed door and headphones

I would also try to move out so I wasn’t near this toxic environment

TinaYouFatLard · 14/03/2022 12:45

If I was your manager I would be wondering about the appropriateness of your work environment and whether you are able to do your job in those circumstances.

Do you have an office to work in?

AlisonDonut · 14/03/2022 12:46

Ok.

So you need to make a decision about where you sit for meetings in future.

Is this your house, theirs?

Babymamamama · 14/03/2022 12:48

Go into the office? Or time to get your own place if that’s an option?

Favourodds · 14/03/2022 12:49

You need a headset with a good amount of foam around the microphone. They take out all background noise.

(And a less dickheady family)

mintich · 14/03/2022 12:58

That's something I know my mother would do too!

NowEvenBetter · 14/03/2022 17:19

Were you looking for advice? Headset recommendations?

MMAMPWGHAP · 14/03/2022 17:59

I was listening to a productivity podcast (I know!) today and Krisp was mentioned. It’s a way to block out background noise. Might help.

Oh god how embarrassing, this is totally something my mother would have done when i was still at home. I moved out as soon as I could, and now in my 40s I'm no contact with her.

Lastqueenofscotland · 14/03/2022 18:12

You need to move out.
