How do you obtain a 2nd original marriage certificate.

I am thinking of divorcing my husband. I will have a civil service pension when I retire. It is in my maiden name. When I got married 10 years ago I was told I would have to send my original marriage cert to the pension scheme agency in order to change it to my married name. I did not want to do this at the time as the pension provider could not guarantee it could send back the marriage cert safely. Due to experience of post getting lost, I am loathe to do this. On divorce, I understand that you surrender your marriage cert. I wondered if I can get another original marriage cert so I have one to give to the solicitor and one to send to the pension agency. Advice welcome.

Either you contact the register office where you got married or you can do it online on the GRO website.

I got a second marriage certificate shortly after getting married so I did not have to send the original away. I just contacted the registry office who did another one which is a certified copy and can be used just the same as the original.

You can order one from the GRO www.gov.uk/order-copy-birth-death-marriage-certificate

When you say original marriage certificate, they are all actually certified copies of the certificate that was signed by the two of you in the official Register - so you can have as many as you want, at any time.

If you go onto the website of the registration district where you got married, you'll be able to order a certified copy of the certificate on there.

I've recently had lots of requests from pension companies for my "original" marriage certificate. For all of them I've sent a photocopy certified ad a true copy by either a teacher friend or a "bank official" friend and they've all paid out without query.
