Friend with very different moral standards and values?

On Saturday evening I had a rather upsetting conversation with my friend which I posted about here

I've thought about the replies and what to do about it, and I'm going to have to have a firm conversation with her. But now it's raised another question - can you be real friends with someone whose moral values and standards are vastly different to your own? Is that a good enough reason to end a friendship of longstanding (once the immediate issue has been resolved)? We manage to have friends with different religious, political, sport affiliations, but what about this?
