Meeting the parents

It looks like I might be meeting my boyfriend’s parents, this weekend, at their house. I will probably meet his brother and sister in law too. Im not particularly nervous but I really would like to make a great first impression. Do you have any tips? Should I shake their hand or is that too formal?

Oo exciting! Good first impression - always start with a smile, take the lead from them (handshakes / hugs / air kisses etc) and take a deep breath. Are you formal enough to take a gift? I took flowers and port when I met my DHs parents (because he had mentioned they liked a good port so I figured it would get me on a good foot!) but not everyone does, your OH might be able to advise. Take your time, don't worry about getting to know everything at once. Do they have any hobbies or interests you share and could mention? I kept things quite superficial for the first few meetings, general chat about work / holidays / pets / hobbies. I think being polite goes a long way too, please and thankyou etc 😊 Good luck!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply! I was planning on taking some flowers. You’re right, I shall follow their lead Smile
