Fuming with DP and glasses

TwoCoffeesPlease · 10/02/2022 08:21

In October last year my DP left his glasses on the floor when taking a nap on the sofa, he stepped on them when he woke up and they broke. Replaced with specsavers 241, £300 all in because of the lenses.

TWO WEEKS later we were on holiday and he left his BRAND NEW glasses on the floor in our bedroom just randomly between the door and bed. I went for a wee in the dark in the night, stepped on them and they broke AGAIN.

Fortunately there was a pair left from the 241.

DP has a manual job that creates a lot of dust, general debris in the air. He normally wears an old pair of glasses but yesterday claimed he couldn’t find them and wore his normal ones to work. Comes back and the lenses are terribly scratched and he can’t see through them properly so they will now also need replacing!

That’s three pairs of glasses in 5 months!! I am furious at the waste of money and carelessness. We are trying to save to do house renovations as we bought a fixer upper and I am just furious at the constant set backs because of carelessness!

Oh and the work glasses were on his desk in his office upstairs, I found them in 10 seconds Angry

Asda is cheaper

And he’s an idiot.

labyrinthlaziness · 10/02/2022 08:26

I would be pretty annoyed about this too as it is expensive.

What is the cheapest pair he can get? This is prescription dependent of course, but really if he is going to be a wally about his glasses he needs to not buy expensive ones. Or buy him prescription goggles that are hard to break Grin

Have you had a sensible conversation with him about this? Is that possible? Surely he doesn;' want to just waste this amount of money either? If a sensible conversation isn't possible then the glasses are not the root issue.

To be fair he is furious with himself as well which is partly why I am posting. I need to let it out somewhere but not sure making him feel worse by having a go about it is helpful

He needs to stop taking them off all the time and wear them full time, or wear them on a chain. Either that or contact lenses or laser eye treatment.

Obviously he shouldnt just leave them places, but if he keeps accidentally doing that he needs a different strategy

Oh I wouldn't be bothered about making him feel worse - he is being a twat, surely you are allowed to be annoyed?

NotAnotherLurker · 10/02/2022 08:48

Mine did that too but blamed me for stepping on them even though he had left them on the floor. Also continually leaves them balanced by sink etc. Am constantly on edge about it - no advice just sympathy !

LindaEllen · 10/02/2022 08:50

Tbh I'd just leave him to it. His glasses, his expense if they get broken. We have enough stress in life without taking on other people's, too.

Theunamedcat · 10/02/2022 08:51

I leave my glasses in the car because I'm a klutz

Toddlerteaplease · 10/02/2022 08:52

I have similar with my friend in a nursing home. He doesn't take care of them so they get broken. This time I've bought a spare pair and I've kept them at home.

GlumyGloomer · 10/02/2022 08:55

If his normal glasses are ruined in one day at work then why do the work glasses fair any better? Should he not be wearing goggles or a face shield or something? (Misses point entirely)

I think the point is that the work glasses are an old prescription so it doesn’t matter if they get beaten up. He just needs to be able to see well enough to do the job, not like driving or something where you need to be able to see properly

But yes I agree some prescription goggles would be the obvious answer!

Well my strategy not to be outwardly annoyed about it lasted about 5 minutes because he ignored his alarm for half an hour because he had a bad sleep. I also had a bad sleep, stressing about finding the extra money for more new glasses, but still got up at 7am to clean the bathrooms. So I’ve said he deserves so suffer like I do and now he is making me a coffee I assume to get back in my good books

Not the point I know, but he needs to be wearing protective eye wear provided by work if his glasses got so badly damaged in a day.

Imagine what is getting round his glass and into his eyes!

MrsReeves · 10/02/2022 09:07

Glasses direct or similar. Cheapest pair I own cost me £12. Why is a grown adult leaving their glasses on the floor? Hmm

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/02/2022 09:11

Is it his money or family money?

If he's leaving you short for monthly bills and shopping etc cos he's to lazy akd special to use a glasses case I'd be angry too.

Mind u id be angry id married such am idiot. Once is an accident. Three incidents is juay stupidity

Whatwouldscullydo · 10/02/2022 09:11

Just

TheApexOfMyLife · 10/02/2022 09:14

He isn’t angry at himself.
He is angry he has shown how reckless he is and he doesn’t like you knowing.

stuntbubbles · 10/02/2022 09:17

I would be furious. DP has horribly expensive glasses because he has such horrific eyesight he has to have the lenses shaved down so he doesn’t look completely mad, and he’s incredibly careful about both his sight and his glasses, which are a similar price. He’d no more leave them on the floor or out of their case than flush £300 cash down the loo.

HadaVerde · 10/02/2022 09:22

Why is he spending so much on glasses.

If he isn’t wearing them constantly and so leaving them around then they must just be for close work/reading?

Get a multi pack of readers from Amazon. 4 pairs for around £10.

scoobydoo1971 · 10/02/2022 09:22

Request a copy of the eye prescription from the place you were both tested. Then order cheaper glasses using an online shop. Huge mark up on High street shop frames.

Yeah good idea. If they are single vision lenses then select specs do pairs for £6 if you get the basic lenses. Ive got these and theyre fine
Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 10/02/2022 09:25

He needs one of those chains!!
