Could anyone who has been or is currently in a refuge please share their experiences?

I will most likely be found a place on Tuesday and have no idea what to expect!

Hi yes I have been in two different ones. They're surprisingly nice! Some of them even have self contained flats so you can remain private if you wish.
They all have communal areas, staff office in the building, a children's activity room with a children's activity workers etc Thanks

If you don't get one with self contained flats, then you'll have a room (or two if you have kids) with a bed etc and then either. your own kitchen space in a room with multiple kitchens within it, or you'll share your kitchen with one other family

You usually have your own assigned bathroom (if you don't get a self contained flat).

Also, there is sometimes computers available to use with internet access although the ones I stayed in didn't have Wi-Fi throughout the building. Then again, this a few years ago.

There is always a communal lounge area with toys for the children.

The locations of all the Refuges are kept entirely confidential (even locals won't know where it is) and very, very secure. When you're in there you are SAFE!

One last thing, don't worry if you forget something - they have it ALL there! They have a magic cupboard with everything from knickers, to toothbrushes, shampoo, nappies, clothes - everything. If you need it, they'll get you it Thanks

You're very welcome. If there's anything else you want to know, I'm happy to answer if I can. Either here or via PM.

Stay strong, you can do this 💖

Ps, Something else I've just remembered. In case you weren't already aware, once you're in there, you'll be considered a priority for rehousing by the council (either in town the Refuge is in, or whatever town you want to relocate to).
Also, the Staff are like Angels. They will help & advocate for you on any issue you have. Such as dealing with clerical/finance stuff (benefits etc), arranging for your larger belongings to go into storage, housing list stuff. Registering with a GP etc etc. They're brilliant xx
