I love the new series! I know lots of people don’t agree but I’m already addicted.
Anyway, is it just me who is completely over the moon for Miranda? Not even because she’s discovered her sexuality but because she’s been true to herself and sought out what makes her truly happy? Interested to know how others feel watching this.

I am also really enjoying the show
But the Miranda storyline is no big deal to me
I agree Che could be any gender
I do find Che very charismatic and attractive as well.

My disappointment was that Miranda married Steve, I didn't think they were a good match - and back then I was more judgey about what characters would and wouldn't do 😂

I wasn't thrilled that she had a baby either but now that Carrie is childfree, I'm fine. At the time, I thought we'd end up with all of them having children except Sam.

Did Steve's mother have dementia? I wonder if they are going with her staying with Steve for that kind of reason?

I do understand the change in her character. I'm 45 and the differences in me, from 30, are striking. I have no idea what I can and can't say. At work, you can avoid everything but then IRL I think I have caused offence with some things I didn't know were offensive, just because I didn't have my super diplomatic hat on.

I hate this phrase, but as a "woman of colour", I hear people trying not to offend all the time. So Miranda being unsure doesn't make me cringe.

@BalladOfBarryAndFreda
No need for sarcasm , not every one watches this , a few people went down the Miranda Hart route
Enjoy your programme

jackfrosttoes · 14/01/2022 18:13

Well i thought Miranda had done a take off of 'and just like that' - I'm looking forward to watching the SATC update - I loved it but it was quite sad at times - I agree though, was never especially convinced by Miranda marrying Steve in the first place.

I suppose the writers did always shoe horn topical things into the plot.

Stiffcondomhat · 14/01/2022 18:27

Despite myself I'm really enjoying the series although I agree several things about Miranda are out of character. I read an interview with Cynthia nihon where she said something like this series would write the wrongs of the lack of diversity in satc.
I wish Che could be a good old fashioned Dyke woman though instead of non binary trans.

Lolamento · 14/01/2022 18:54

@Rosewaterblossom

No way. Miranda went to Harvard and was a bullsy lawyer in a 1990s man's world making partner. She was the most realistic about life out of the 4 of them.

They've turned her into half the woman she was. No way would the Miranda in the series put up with her son and his girlfriend disrespecting the home like they do.. miranda put Madna in her place... many times.. when she thought her boundaries were being crossed.

It doesn't help that they have turned Steve, who 20 years ago was really "laddish", into someone who now seems about 70. He went from young, a bit nieve, loving "scooby doo" cartoons and shooting hoops just before their son was born, to old man with hearing aids who doesn't know how to satisfy the woman he's been with for years and years.

It's like they have started these characters from scratch and ignored all they were in the series..

I find Miranda”s character has developed to match Cynthia Nixon real life. She is a lesbian and married with a transgender son. She is known for being an LGBTQ activist so this is probably her idea and a box ticking. Good for her but I find the sexual scenes a bit hard to watch.
Shhhnow · 14/01/2022 19:09

@RJnomore1

Different view point….the woke stiff is off but in general Miranda has lost her way a bit; doesn’t want to be a corporate lawyer and is no longer quite sure of who she actually is. Steve’s she’s awfully, it does happen, she’s bored, resentful and uncertain of herself. Along comes che, gorgeous, strong, sure if themself and it’s no wonder she has one hell of a crush. Then this fantastic person suddenly sees her as more than a grey haired post menopausal has been and into bed she falls.

I actually think Ches gender/ sex is a complete red herring and it could have been a man just as easily, it’s a tale as old as time.

This is exactly it for me. Miranda still has fire in her belly and a want for sexual passion (which she’s always had, but previously directed at her career) but she’s just not going to get that from Steve. They’re now on different paths and have outgrown one another. This happens a lot, some come through it and others don’t but I’m proud of her for not settling with the idea that that’s it for her.

I'm still watching, but I'm not enjoying the way they are trying to shoehorn in every single issue. Each episode has turned into a grown up after school special
Instead of just being more diverse and having a wider diverse group of actors who are there because they are good characters and actors regardless of race, they have to hit you over the head with it.
Then make sure they get in the pronouns, the transgender, the non binary, the cultural appropriation. Every episode I'm waiting for the next "thing".

I loved Schitts Creek and remember watching an interview with the actor who played David where he was saying something like, the characters were gay but it was never a thing, never referred to and there was never any prejudice displayed in the show. It just showed it how it should be. I loved that. (Probably not explained very well but hopefully you get what I mean).

Shhhnow · 14/01/2022 19:38

I agree with the shoe horning. They’re making issues out of non issues and it feels embarrassing to see.

Oh I dont know why but her sex scenes make me cringe I find myself fast forwarding them. Im not like this about any other show and I think Im the only person left that watches The L Word Generation X😂😂😂 i dont know if its the acting or if its because I dont like Che. Its definitely all Cynthia Nixons doing I bet SJP is having sleepless nights over it!

Other than that I do think the show has found its feet and Im really enjoying it.

Whysolong7 · 14/01/2022 19:55

I agree with all the disappointment about Miranda, the only upside is she looks brilliant and less surgically enhanced than others.

The woke bit is the worst for me, it’s like all the characters have been locked in a box for 20 years and then wheeled out ‘bemused’ by the new world.

It’s New York ffs, as a corporate lawyer Miranda hasn’t engaged with a successful woman of colour anytime before 2021, and therefore doesn’t know what to say to her without offending? Ridiculous and so disappointing. I was looking forward to this being as empowering to older woman as it was for younger woman when first released.

Steve was a great character- now a totally sidelined out of touch grandad. Who runs a hip bar in NY that doesn’t work either 🙅‍♀️

TossaCointoYerWitcha · 15/01/2022 00:05

Playing Devil's Advocate, in that case, should we have also have been proud of Steve when he cheated?

"Grown up after school special" is a great way of putting it.

The latest issue to be shoehorned in was consent. In those cringeworthy sex scenes, Che constantly asking, "Can I do this?","Can I do this?", "Can I do this?" - even though consent was very clear.

It was put there with the hope of generating "Che blah blah blah consent blah blah blah and I'm here for it!" / "unproblematic queen" tweets.

It's so contrived.

No, that was an attempt at dirty talk.....she said "tell me you like it, tell me not to stop"...she was already all over her at that point and didn't ask for consent to touch her boobs!

and then after a while Che asked once "can I touch you"...before she put her hand down her trousers.

Che clearly likes to make people beg for it...in the latest episode she said something about how Miranda should have asked because it's hot to ask for what you want.

SpidersAreShitheads · 15/01/2022 06:00

@LeQuern

Agree with all the ‘negative’ responses. Hate what they’ve done to Miranda, Charlotte (become a social climbing nightmare), Steve (55 going on 75), Harry (seems to have lost his sex appeal) and Samantha (most of all - appreciate she’s not physically in the series but AS IF the most successful, loyal, open, non judgemental of all of them would be pissed off at Carrie no longer needing a publicist, let alone so pissed off she fucked off from LA / NYC to London. Awful, point scoring story).

I hate that their egos have been allowed to dictate story.

Absolutely all of this.

Clearly women in their 50s can't be sexy, strong, and powerful so they've damped down their characters to make them a shadow of what they previously were, having to learn about Instagram and wokeness, because bless their hearts, how could they know about this stuff being in their 50s? Being sassy Manhattan career women, of course they're completely innocent and pathetic..... 😳

It's completely ruined for me. The very core of what Miranda stood for has been cast aside, and there's a very strong suggestion that their beef with Kim Cattrell has influenced the story they've written for Samantha. It's bollocks and doesn't add up at all. It also backs up Kim's side of the story that SJP & co are bitchy - the plot is an absolute swipe at her and is all very unnecessary.

I'm not watching the rest of this BS.

It's a good point. I think they're both bad for cheating but people will say how brave Miranda's character is because she's exploring her sexuality. As if it's a get out of jail free card. In reality, they'd both be as bad as each other but Steve did actually tell Miranda and apologise. She's trying to continually cheat. It shows nothing good about her character, I can't watch the programme now. It's nothing like the original.
SunshineOnKeith · 15/01/2022 08:28

I think it's being written by young writers. It certainly seems a pointed attempt at 'this is how clueless younger people think older women are'

It's like a parody

piney07 · 15/01/2022 08:49

I don’t think Miranda is that out of character? She was always pretty selfish and mean to Steve and they were never a good match.

The bumbling scene in the lecture at the beginning was out of character but it also in a way reflected the changing times and how people react to women, the assumption that she is a “Karen”, and her having to explain herself within that context.

I also don’t think they’re too “woke”. “Woke” would have been Charlotte happily accepting her new son Rock, but no they’ve had a lot of discussion about it and so far it’s the only show I’ve seen on TV that has addressed the pain/confusion around this and different perspectives in a funny way. This is what is happening in the US to mothers of teenage girls, it’s totally on brand for them to have it as a plot line.

Similarly the other woke stuff, like the podcast and the way that’s presented. I find it funny because it is all about navigating this from the women’s perspectives and sometimes it shows how the wokeness in the world is overdone and hypocritical - e.g. when Carrie was forced to talk about masturbation when she wasn’t comfortable, however everyone else gets to be who they are comfortable being in this new world.

piney07 · 15/01/2022 08:51

I was upset when Miranda poured out the negroni ingredients though, surely she is not so alcoholic as to drink a stand alone bottle of Campari 😂

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 15/01/2022 08:51

I'm wondering why this is in Relationships and not Telly Addicts?

Yep. I’m not sure women’s consent is a big deal to the writers given how much they celebrated men wanking in public and mocked Carrie as ‘prudish’ for being uncomfortable around the conversation.
LittleWins · 15/01/2022 09:02

@User65412

Completely agree with a pp. What they've done to Steve is awful. 15 years more like 50 for him! It's cringe worthy.
100%! He’s now playing an idiot and he was always the strongest of the men.

I loved Miranda in the original but she’s so cringeworthy in this.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 15/01/2022 09:14

Miranda and Samantha were the only reasons I watched SATC - I think I was 15ish when I stumbled across it (I’m 35 now).

No Samantha - and not only that, they’re making out it’s because D-List celeb Carrie dropped her? Mmmm. No. Carrie is a self centred arsehole and I’d wager there’s some part of the falling out that she just doesn’t grasp.

Miranda? What the fuck has happened to her? She was smart, ambitious, driven, sharp and witty.

I get that the meno causes a lot of changes, but really? To this extent?

SlyAvocado · 15/01/2022 10:15

I hated the pouring of the Campari too, surely you’d just give it to a neighbour or at the back of the shelf

Journeylikenomother · 15/01/2022 14:46

I was never a fan of Steve, he was always a bit of a bumbling idiot, they've now just upped it to old bumbling idiot

Kt6346 · 20/01/2022 21:10

I'm enjoying the show although was a bit unsure at first. It's so different to the series though, I'm almost thinking of it as a separate thing! Miranda was my favourite character in the series, she was so witty and cool. I kind of hate how they style her in this (and in the movies too), she looks too glam and almost awkward. Miranda would never have looked like that, she was always way more casual compared to the others.

As for the storyline, I'm finding it weirdly relatable (not the lesbian/queer part, the being unhappy in life part), (anyone else?) and in a way I like it but it's definitely not the Miranda we all know! I have a feeling something is going to go wrong with Che too, it seems too good to be true
