Saying I love you whilst drunk

Hi all,

I am in a new relationship, started seeing each other end of October and made it official on Christmas Day. On New Year’s Eve we went out with my friend and her boyfriend, and by this point we were all moderately drunk but not blind drunk. My dp suddenly pulled me in and told me that he loved me when we were sat down, and repeated it a couple of times as well as saying “how is it that I have landed a girl like you”. It took me by surprise and my reaction was “you can’t say that” because I really didn’t see it coming at all, but not in an annoyed way or anything. And he continued to say it as the night went on, I didn’t say anything back but we were being quite affectionate with each other.

The next day I said briefly “do you remember what you said last night” and he said “yeah I do but you told me not to say it” then I explained that it just took me by surprise that’s all and I didn’t mean that in a negative way. I’ve since said to him that for statements like that I’d prefer to hear it when he is sober. But nothing has been said about it since as we have continued being affectionate with each other and carried on as normal. He’s not said that he loves me since.

We are generally both very affectionate people, he can be quite shy and awkward when he hasn’t had a drink and not yet fully open about his emotions/feelings (but i know this is normal given the early stage we are at) although he does say very lovely sweet things to me normally. So from this is it likely that he has fallen in love with me or just a drunken rambling?

For context I am 29 he is 30 and no children.

I'd say he meant it.

Why do us women think the death out of everything.

My partner first told me when he was drunk.

blindmansbluff · 06/01/2022 11:12

I'd say he meant it too and because of your reaction is too afraid to say it again

OGenkiDesuKa · 06/01/2022 11:16

Aww he was in the moment and you’ve ruined it!

titanic25 · 06/01/2022 11:23

He must have meant it. lots of men do speak up their minds with more honesty when they are drunk. Especially mine does

Crystalvas · 06/01/2022 11:24

Considering hes shy and as you say awkward i’d say your reaction put him right off saying it again.

Aww bless him, he got a bit drunk and told you he loves you. I think your reaction is a bit stuffy/formal and a teeny bit controlling - he is now going to be questioning everything before he talks because you have policed his language.

HaggisBurger · 06/01/2022 11:40

In vino veritas and all that!! But yes, I’d prefer to hear it for the first time sober and not mid-shag also 😂

AtrociousCircumstance · 06/01/2022 11:42

Poor sod is probably waiting for you to say it back.

I generally think people are more likely to tell the truth when drunk. Big caveat however is that being squiffy / drunk can over-emphasise lovely warm feelings, and lead you to being more lovey dovey than you feel when sober. Hence all the 'I LOVE you's' to random people by drunks.

So he may have started to feel he loves you. He may have warm feelings towards you and they were magnified by drink.

Be honest with each other. Don't rush things. Enjoy what you currently have. If he is having those feelings he will no doubt say it again when sober before too long!

Riapia · 06/01/2022 13:12

I hope for his future happiness that he didn’t mean it.😉

RedCandyApple · 06/01/2022 13:32

I first said I loved my (now ex) when I was drunk, I did mean it, I think you were a little bit mean and you seem to want him to say it again even after how you acted, I’m not surprised he hasn’t! I take it you don’t feel the same way as him?

Newrelationship1 · 06/01/2022 14:49

I didn’t mean it in a mean way at all it just took me by complete surprise. Since then we have spoken about our strong feelings for each other when sober. I feel that I definitely will fall in love with him and I’m on the way to doing so.
