Making friends in a new area

I moved to a new area 5 years ago. I though having 3 young children would help me make new friends but it hasn't really.
I've tried so hard to make an effort with people but out of 3 school classes, going to various mums nights out and coffee mornings, i have made the grand total of 1 female friend. I think some of this is down to the fact I'm not in the playground loads so some people see the same people every day whereas it's always a bit hit and miss with me.
I feel like I've invested so much time in building relationships but It feels so hard to transition from school gates chat to real friendship. I have lots of friendly acquaintances but they never really progress further and people seem to all make their own friends. I'm always the one to suggest play dates.
The problem I have is I work long hours 4 days a week so I'm not in the playground loads. But I'm also hopeless at sports, don't have any hobbies so I can't find anything local to get involved in either!
Can anyone relate?
