Rude famous people thread 2

107 replies

IntermittentParps · 11/10/2021 18:13

Just read the whole of the first one and it's not taking new fecking messages!
I wanted to carry it on as I love sleb threads I don't have a life

I'd be GUTTED if Joanna Lumley or Glenda Jackson were horrible.

I've always felt, totally irrationally, that Dominic West would be a tit.

Dolly Parton MUST be lovely.

David Walliams gives me the serious creeps and I'm glad to read it's not just me.

Mine:
John Humphrys: twunt. Argumentative, combative, rude for the sake of being rude. Loathed him.
Graham Norton. 'met' him years ago in a room full of people, admittedly, and talked in a small group with him, but he seemed funny, sweet, surprisingly shy. He had to sort of make an entrance into our boardroom and when he opened the door and saw how many people had crowded in there to meet him he looked genuinely taken aback and a bit shaken, which I liked him for.

Desperate to know who the 'don't get funny with me, dear' author from the last thread is!

@acornfed, India Hicks?

cantgetmyheadroundit · 12/10/2021 20:01

For whoever asked on the other thread - I've met Greg Davies twice, and he was an absolute darling, both times. Also very, very attractive 😉

I've also met Brian Blessed twice, and he is one of the most charming, clever and funny men I've ever met in my life. God love him.

Vanuatu · 12/10/2021 20:10

I am so glad that Billy Connolly is as lovely as I imagined, I am a huge fan.

I think the rude author is Will Self. I can hear his voice (in my head) saying it while looking down his nose at you.

IntermittentParps · 12/10/2021 22:21

I hadn’t thought of Will Self! In my mind’s eye the author is more sort of crumpled and red-trousered.
Not michael morpurgo, surely Shock

I have met Michael Morpurgo and he was charming and friendly. He seemed really interested in the people he was talking to - so the mystery author remains a mystery.....

TurnipTales · 12/10/2021 22:56

I sold Jeremy Paxman a shirt a few years ago. He was lovely, warm and struck up a conversation with me. Can't remember what we talked about, but vividly remember how nice he was

AnnieSnap · 12/10/2021 23:22

I have no famous people experiences. I saw one in Kings Cross and one in an airport lounge, but I’m in the ‘don’t bug them’ camp, so left them alone. I enjoy reading the stories though, especially the nice ones (despite what a couple of mean spirited poster say)!

Justwingingit2005 · 12/10/2021 23:28

We met a Man U player in the Trafford Centre. My son was too scared to speak to him so I went over (I didn't know him from adam). He called my son over. My son told him he felt like he didn't want to play anymore. The Man U player told him to keep working hard as dreams can come true. He spent a good 15 mins chatting. Weeks later I sent the photos to Man U training ground. He signed them and send some more signed stuff in the post.

My son later rejoined a football team. All thanks to that footy star.

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 12/10/2021 23:37

The only famous people I've met as an adult have been authors at book signings. But I'm terrible at face recognition - so maybe I've met more famous people but didn't know they were!

Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (mayherestinpeace) were both lovely (two separate signings). Neil drew a rat in my first edition copy of Coraline, and Pterry was kind enough to sign not only my book but one I had brought for my sister. He also made a joke that the bookshop phone kept ringing and the ringtone kept reminding him of the Captain Pugwash theme tune 😂 I would love to say I replied with something witty but sadly my friend and I just laughed like slack-jawed loons 😳

When I was about 10 I met Timmy Mallet in the gift shop of the Natural history museum and I persuaded my mum to buy an autograph book (remember those?) at the hugely inflated gift shop price so I could get his. I was an incredibly shy child so I'm actually impressed that I had the courage to ask him. It was only a fleeting interaction but he was nice, even though he was there with his own kids and "off duty".

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 12/10/2021 23:43

Oh, and a friend of mine wrote a letter many years ago to Alan Titchmarsh to say thanks for inspiring her to work on her garden and how it had improved her mental health. He wrote a personal letter back with some suggestions of more plants she could add. She was bowled over and adopted him as her "fantasy dad" 😊

SpindleWharl · 12/10/2021 23:49

Jo Brand wrote the most lovely personal letter to my daughter nearly a decade ago.

Rhannion · 13/10/2021 00:09

We met Toby Stephens ( Maggie Smith’s son) in an airport not long after he was in a Bond film. He was pleasant and laughed when I asked “ How is your mum doing, I think she is wonderful “ he agreed.

An elderly relative of mine ended up sitting next to Joanna Lumley on an EasyJet flight. They got on like a house on fire, apparently. Jo took my relative's postal address and sent her a postcard with a little pen portrait on it, thanking her for being such good company on the plane. How charming is that?!

Lw87 · 13/10/2021 00:16

I saw Ricky Tomlinson (Jim Royle) in a bar in Benidorm years ago, he was lovely, he let us go infront of him too as he thought he'd pushed in

Since he was so nice, don’t you want to name him?
uggmum · 13/10/2021 05:14

Anne diamond - complete cow. Not just once but multiple times.

Aled Jones - absolutely horrible person. Full of his own self importance and thoroughly mean.

That's so lovely. Is your son still playing?

Neil Gaiman drew me a spider in my copy of Anansi Boys 😁😁

Grin that is hilarious!

Mylittlecoconuts · 13/10/2021 14:24

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit

A couple of years ago my friend was on a quiet beach in Greece, only one other couple on it. The woman came over asking what my friend was drinking and when she was told diet coke, said 'oh I don't think so' and dragged her off to share a bottle of wine. She and her dh spent the next few hours getting quietly sozzled with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Delightful company apparently.
My dad worked in a restaurant which they used to visit quite frequently. My dad used to say they were the nicest people ever and a were never rude or impatient and a joy to talk to.
Buddywoo · 13/10/2021 14:34

Regarding Will Self a close friend's daughter did a lot of work with him in the publishing world. When I was ill she asked him if he would sign one of his books for me. He said he would if she thought I was clever enough to understand it and even wrote words to that effect on the flyleaf. It still sits on my shelves unread!

Somethingsnappy · 13/10/2021 14:53

@KaycePollard

This kind of speculation is prurient and distasteful.

Get a life.

Oh dear, have you spotted yourself on a thread like this? Go on, tell us, who are you..? Grin
AdobeWanKenobi · 13/10/2021 15:00

@IntermittentParps

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe, what? Confused
Ahhh, they're back. Same posted who thought the last thread was abhorrent, yet continued to read and post on it, sees new thread with same title and continues to read and post on it.

Surely common sense would be to click hide thread and move on. Never understand why people who find something so distasteful continue to subject themselves to it. Very odd.

IntermittentParps · 13/10/2021 15:05

Thanks Adobe. I was wondering what the fuck I'd done to annoy someone so much Grin
