Rude "famous people"

We have a famous designer at my kid's school, born to a very wealthy family. Her kids are nice
She can be very unfriendly but inconsistently so - will often blank people one day and be friendly the next. Acts quite haughtily with the teachers. At times very abrupt.
She doesn't have to be friends with us civilians - that I fully understand. But what's with the rude behaviour? What's going on there? The school mums are a pretty innocuous bunch and I'd like to think we are friendly and welcoming.

@notHarris

My uncle attended a school down the road from Enid Blyton's house. He told us that when she was writing she would invite a group of children to tea, so she could get inspiration. They all hated going because she was cold and unfriendly apparently.
My mum told me that she was abusive towards her own children.

adoptedbumpkin Ouch! Grin Grin

RobertaFirmino · 10/10/2021 20:12

If anybody tells me Bukayo Sako is nasty, I shall cry all evening!!!

I think I would too - he's so adorable! DM met Trent Alexander-Arnold in John Lewis once - apparently he was a 'lovely young man'.

Houseofvelour · 10/10/2021 20:12

A friend of mine went to see one of Lenny Henry's shows a good decade or more ago. She met Dawn French in the ladies and asked for an autograph and Dawn started shouting at her, saying "this night is about my husband!!"
Apparently she was a total bitch.

I know Grin Still makes me giggle. My relative found both comments hilarious, because the guy was so deluded.
HeraInTheHereAndNow · 10/10/2021 20:17

@FancyLampshade… of course!

Washeduponthebeach · 10/10/2021 20:17

She’s never struck me as a very nice woman.

I'm faceblind and sometimes blank people I know. If they know me really well they (and I) have a good laugh at it but I know (because I've been told) that it can come over as standoffishness.

@aCorcernedPrude
The jockey was Liam Treadwell . He’d just won the Grand National on 100/1 Mon Mome , he seemed such a lovely chap and Claire Balding was so rude to him. He tragically passed away last year after battling mental health problems.

dottypencilcase · 10/10/2021 20:25

Not surprised about Clare Balding being mentioned at all. I saw her on celebrity gogglebox (love the show) and she was vile to her partner who seemed so soft-spoken and unsure of herself. CB was so mean patronising.

Biscoffee · 10/10/2021 20:25

@WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll

I think it was more likely to be that he was of his generation and had very good manners.

Could be..............perhaps............

Isn't the phrase 'Star Suckers', though?

I’ve absolutely no idea what you mean by star suckers.
Libraryghost · 10/10/2021 20:26

I went to school with Robbie Williams. He was a right prick then and he is an even bigger prick now.

I was surprised by it as well.

It was blatant and rather shocking.

I guess that's the Full Monty rather than Dawn French?!

ArranMumma · 10/10/2021 20:31

I think you sound like the mean one. She’s picking her kids up from school, it’s not a popularity contest.

KirstenBlest · 10/10/2021 20:31

@MarieIVanArkleStinks

I'm also posting in defence of Chris Packham. He's spoken openly and very eloquently about his ASD, including how dreadful he felt at being unable to attend his stepdaughter's graduation as he finds crowds incredibly difficult. So a crowded restaurant, or a bar which is full enough to have to queue for food, I can only imagine are the very idea of hell to him.

A good friend of mine also knows him and has worked closely with him on many occasions. According to her he's unfailingly kind, polite and patient, as well as warm, witty and very good company.

On the subject of naturalists, I had the most embarrassing encounter on Brownsea Island with Bill Oddie. I didn't approach him, or pester him for autographs: the very idea of having a well-known face is appalling to me and they must get sick to death of having random strangers think they can lay claim to their time and attentions by right.

To put it shortly, I had no idea he was right behind me and he ended up privy to a conversation between me and my DH that I'd have NO wish for anyone to overhear.

We were walking back to the ferry, DS in his sling, when Oddie's landrover passed right by us. As we stood aside to let them pass he caught my eye and gave me a broad, naughty wink.

I wanted the floor to swallow me up!

She's not his stepdaughter. She's his ex-partner's daughter.
Antonia2021 · 10/10/2021 20:31

Lenny Henry - seen him be v rude to waitresses

Jamie Oliver - have witnessed him being v grumpy (filming)

Anna Friel - quite strange and affected

Gordon Ramsey is really really nice and chilled , have met him a couple of times

Antonia2021 · 10/10/2021 20:32

I bet ! He is always red and shouty
EmmalineC · 10/10/2021 20:33

So many of these anecdotes are irrelevant - unless you have spent a significant length of time in someone's company, how on earth can you know whether someone is a rude/entitled/grumpy person? Or utterly sweet and kind because they once smiled at your child?

Declan Donnelly bought me a glass of wine once but that wasn't because he was nice, it was because he thought I was someone he knew. Although he probably is nice...

Antonia2021 · 10/10/2021 20:35

@namechangerrrrssss

Gordon Ramsey is the complete opposite to how he is on tv e.g. Hells Kitchen. Very charismatic and charming.

Stephanie Seymour - exceptionally rude to cabin crew.

Cheryl Cole or whatever her surname is now - surly, aggressive and rude.

Gordon is so nice. Sat next to him and Tana in a restaurant and he was lovely to everyone , staff , other diners and made a right fuss of my dog
Antonia2021 · 10/10/2021 20:36

Bernard Sumner is really nice

AttilaTheMeerkat · 10/10/2021 20:38

Glad to read that re Bernard 😀

bonnieliesovertheocean · 10/10/2021 20:40

Tim Minchin has an article in the Guardian talking about the effect of fame on an individual. Brilliant read. He says that the idea that only wankers become famous is not true and it's that famous people become wankers because of his feeling that eventually they view themselves in the third person and believe the hype. Sorry rubbish at links but it's a great article.

PreparationPreparationPrep · 10/10/2021 20:40

@CinemaPantomime

Met David and Carrie Grant and they were absolutely lovely. So genuine, chatty and kind. Went out of their way to engage with the children present and took their time very patiently with the shy overwhelmed ones - David goofing about and Carrie being gentle and kind. Mr Tumble was there too - he was ok, nothing wrong as such as he went through the motions but not a patch on David and Carrie.
I met David and Carrie too they were both really relaxed and nice taking time to speak to as many young people as possible
Antonia2021 · 10/10/2021 20:41

@DoraMaude

Through work I've met lots of celebrities. A few I can think of based on this thread.

Nice -
Gordon Ramsay - really charming
Fiona Phillips
Kate Garraway
Jimmy Nesbitt
Gregg Wallace - I know, I know.... nice but needy
The Johnsons - Rachel and Leo. Really nice. Boris (Al) too surprisingly, but in some ways quite shy.
Michael Gove - impeccable manners
Bill Clinton - very charismatic
Jade Goody
Eamonn Holmes

Not so nice -
Miriam Margolyes - rude
John Bercow
John Torode
Caron Keating
Lorraine Kelly
Geri Halliwell
Naga Munchetty

And utterly horrible
Nick Knowles

Oh yeah - eamonn Holmes really really nice , massive tipper !

Bill Clinton - fwoor and nice

John Major - amazingly nice and charismatic
