How likely is it that someone can track your phone? And what can they track?

Hi.
I’ve had to name change again because of what I think is a breach of my MN account by STBX. I’m leaving him because he is emotionally abusive.

I posted on some posts here and had a very strange message in my inbox from a male user that has never posted before. Don’t want to give too many details away but it read as though he was telling me I will regret my decision (whilst pretending he doesn’t know me)

I saw a friend yesterday and read the message to her and showed it to her etc and today, it has gone. Withdrawn at their request - apparently.

I think maybe years and years of this abuse is making me paranoid. Can he hear my conversations? Can he see my texts and my passwords on my phone? I’ve change my pin a few times but it has faceID on it. Can someone feasibly track your phone and if they can, can they hear your conversations/read your texts etc?

I’m going out of my mind with anxiety wondering what trick he is going to pull next. This is just (potentially - I concede it may not have been him) one incident in a pattern of increasingly erratic behaviour…

Might be wise to reset your phone to factory settings or get it checked out by a professional.

category12 · 02/10/2021 14:26

Also are your online accounts linked in any way?

Tryagainplease · 02/10/2021 14:32

In what way do you mean?

If I restore, wont I lose all my stuff?

Agree, put your phone back to factory and change passwords on everything. Including email. You should get an alert if someone logs into your email from any device apart from yours. I doubt he can hear your conversations when out of the house. Unless he's bugged something.

Justilou1 · 02/10/2021 14:39

If you have sensitive emails, etc from him, screenshot them, email them to yourself. Save to cloud.

Yes there are apps that can be used on your phone, especially if he's had access to your handset/profile at any point. (Just Google "can I track my wife's phone without her knowing?")
If its Android the apps can be very hard to detect apparently and not necessarily removed by a factory reset.
Your best bet sadly is to buy a new handset, set up a new apple or Google ID and change all the passwords on your social media accounts.
Sorry you are going g through this, it's crazy making because almost impossible to prove what's happening but when I talked to a phone tech about it he said itsquite common

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/10/2021 15:01

So somebody, who you think is your ex, has identified you on MN by what you’ve been posting about and sent you a DM? Why would that mean your phone is being tracked? It just means you need to be more cautious about what you post about and anonymise parts so you aren’t so easy to spot.

insatiableme · 02/10/2021 15:04

If it's a I phone and he puts your Apple ID and password on another Apple device such as a I pad. Any apps, msgs etc will also go to the other device.

insatiableme · 02/10/2021 15:04

Aswell as your phone

Bunchymcbunchface · 02/10/2021 15:07

To install software to your phone he’d have to have access to tour phone.
Is your phone slow? Or losing battery? These can both be signs of added tracking software.

Pinkbonbon · 02/10/2021 15:11

You aren't going mad.

It may have been him or it may have been some other emotionally abusive man out to harm women.

Maybe take your phone to the store and ask them.
I'd also pop to your local library or Internet cafe and use their computer to change passwords on your accounts. Just make sure to log out afterwords. Alternatively, use a friends device.

Geekygeek · 02/10/2021 15:18

If an iPhone. Various ways it can be tracked if you have a linked family account or shared location on find my friends.

Go to settings/privacy/location services.

The “share my location” menu will show you all the people who can see your location and if family sharing is on.

Main menu will show all the apps that can use your location. You can disable from this menu or f any are suspicious.

Isn't it more likely he's been on MN and guessed who you are from your posts?

JustAnother0ldMan · 02/10/2021 15:46

It’s unlikely that someone can track your phone, especially if it has bio security, if it’s an iPhone and you have an apple account, you could change the password on that, use a secure password

And change your online passwords as well using secure passwords

@tranquillitybase

Isn't it more likely he's been on MN and guessed who you are from your posts?
Yes, you’re right. However, there are other reasons why I think this. Strange coincidences and things he has said. Might just be me though!
