Job ideas after being SAHM for 3 years

JC2021 · 01/09/2021 15:19

I didn't have a career post baby, but worked on contracts whilst pursuing creative endeavours on the side. Now I have a child, I don't have such luxury and need to make an income that is decent to support us.

Would anyone recommend any retraining? Or jobs that work well for mums with young children?

Bookkeeping?

I'm happy to take a course.

Craving my independence after so long.

Thanks x

Can you start volunteering somewhere? I've had several friends start volunteering at schools and ended up with jobs and then also training etc

Something in a school is a good idea as it means you get the majority of school holidays. I agree with PP, volunteering is a good way to go

I really wouldn't recommend a job in a school unless you're a qualified teacher due to the poor pay and conditions.

Do you already have a degree OP? If not I would be using this opportunity to build up from the bottom in something that really appeals to you.

What employment skills do you have i.e do you have sales, admin, customer service etc?

UserStillatLarge · 01/09/2021 15:44

What were your contracts and creative endeavours? If these were things you enjoyed is there any capacity to expand these or use the skills you've got? We really need some idea of what you might be interested in to make suggestions.

What skills do you have? How much do you need / want to earn?

I have a degree in Film Studies, fell into admin/PA work in finance (hated it) and creatively was seeking to become a singer. My favourite thing to do is sing and write poetry - not much money in either at my age (mid thirties)

Need something guaranteed whilst I hope to sing on occasional evenings at events/gigs.

How about seeing if you could get contracts to help businesses manage their social media pages. Allowing your admin skills and PA organisation but doing some creative research and creating good copy for businesses to help them be relevant to their clients?

Local government. Find out which temp agency they use and sign up, easy to get a permanent job when you're already in.

Or jobs that work well for mums with young children?
Personally I’d aim for high-paying work that allows you to outsource childcare, pay for holiday clubs, breakfast clubs, etc, and is flexible enough to do things like compress hours or work flexitime, rather than going for low-pay part-time work that gives you holidays off.

Marketing? Copywriting? Film, finance, singing and poetry gives you a nicely varied background and admin/PA skills are transferable.
