Is this a dating app?

The family laptop was open today, locked on DH’s account, when a notification with this icon popped up saying ‘Ellie (23) 3.1km [wave emoji]’. I’m assuming it’s some sort of dating app but before I ask him about it, does anyone know what app it is? I’d like to have some facts before I ask him.

(Hoping the picture attached here - I’ve never attached a photo before.)

I've never seen it but could it be like the nearby friends notification that Facebook has?

Divebar2021 · 28/08/2021 14:48

Is it an iPhone? It looks like the airdrop sign but I thought that was blue.

Divebar2021 · 28/08/2021 14:49

Oops sorry you said laptop.

It says its called one signal. Something to do with reaching customers better?

Thanks both. I guess it could be like the Facebook nearby friends thing, but I’m wondering for what sort of app? He doesn’t use any social media and, as far as I know, doesn’t know anyone called Ellie who’s 23! My theories are that he’s signed up for a dating/meet-up app or it’s a porn website with push notifications - which presumably he’d have had to have registered to for them to be able to send notifications. But I want to know if there could be a more innocent explanation before I confront him.

Could it just be a pop up? Like an ad?

TheChip · 28/08/2021 15:02

"OneSignal is designed to scale with your business and deliver messages more quickly and reliably than the competition."

Its innocent. Especially if he has a business or works in sales or something that requires him to contact customers/clients through messages online.

NoodleStrudel · 28/08/2021 15:32

Thanks @TheChip. I’ve just asked him and he didn’t know what it was so opened up the laptop in front of me to look into it and found lots of similar notifications… they’re coming from a colouring pages website that he uses to print out pictures for the children. I’m feeling terrible for doubting him now and very glad I didn’t go in all guns blazing!

Youre welcome. I'm glad it's resolved and you are no longer worrying!

Some perfectly legit sites that don’t get checked a lot as they are quite static often get infected by various dodgy malware , particularly porn or bit coin related. The Spanish government site for filling in your passenger locator form actually had this the other week- you clicked on an innocuous looking link as part of the process and it was straight to some very dodgy looking stuff!!!
