Mother just tried to tell me my father is gay ( honestly, he's not)

Ugh. God help anyone else who has narcissistic parents...

Long story short, two utterly selfish parents. My childhood (and my two brothers) spent moving around the world for my father's job (not military). Parents put themselves, their marriage and money before their children. Parents finally split - father left mother for OW - when I was 21...30 odd years ago now.

My mother now lives on the other side of the world, I'm very low contact with her because she's very bad for my mental health (I'm bipolar). I found out in the last year that my father tried to dump us all back in my mother's home country when I was 11 and it didn't happen only because his plan failed at literally the last moment...

Anyway. It was my 53rd birthday in the last week. I rang my mother tonight (didn't do it earlier as I've been ill with a bad cold). Got talking about all sorts, my father, the past, etc...and then she decides to come out with probably the stupidest thing I've heard since Brexit...that maybe my father was gay?

This theory is based on a very short friendship he had with a gay work colleague over 40 years ago. That's it. The fact he spent the whole of their 23 years of marriage shagging other women? Excusable because...he was gay! Really! FFS. "Oh he spent our whole marriage shagging other women cause he was actually gay"....yeah, I don't think so.

I think this must be the ultimate grasping at straws. My partner of 12 years is bisexual, so if I thought my father was actually gay I wouldn't care...but bloody hell.

What can you say to this?

Grasping at straws indeed Grin

Internally id probably find myself thinking 'can't wait to tell that story at your funeral' but I do my best to seem normal most of the time so wouldn't say it out loud.

Sort of thing I'd share with my sister only I think!

Of course mother. The only reason you weren't enough for him is because he was gay. Not because you are both narcissistic, self- centred twats.

@noirchatsdeux

I would not be so sure she is wrong
