Period this early? Should I be worried?

Period on day 26 when it’s usually 28 bang on. Does this mean I’m getting less fertile as they are getting shorter? I get very anxious about periods and timings, please be kind.

Have you had your vaccine? Lots of anecdotal reports about that messing up people's cycles (me included!). Also stress can impact our cycle. 2 days early probably too soon to worry unless it's a bigger pattern. See how things are over the next 3 cycles.

TheSecondMrsAshwell · 19/07/2021 12:28

No. I used to have periods every 28 days, but every now and again it would slip one in early, or - even more fun - a bit late.

Cheeeesecake · 19/07/2021 13:15

The vaccine made mine come a week early. But lots of things can make your period come early. Like stress! Or a holiday booked. Or white underwear Wink

Mine sometimes are 1-2 days earlier.

Stress can bring on an early period and many other things. Sometimes it's just one of those things.

Usually your luteal phase is fixed. That is the stage between your ovulation and your period. On average that stage is 14 days so if you have a 28 day cycle on average you will ovulate on day 14 and the have a 14 day luteal stage until your period. These are averages though and everyone is different.

If your period is early or late it usually means you ovulated on a different day. So for example this month you may have ovulated on day 12. Everybody has some variation to their cycles at some point! Lots of things effect this and many people always have some variation. My cycles vary between 29 & 40 days. A short cycle can also show that you didn't ovulate that month which is perfectly normal from time to time. I haven't ovulated at least twice in the time I was trying to conceive and that is considered completely normal.

The only way to know with any confidence when you ovulate is to take your basal body temperature every morning as soon as you wake up (before getting out of bed, drinking, checking your phone etc) and when it rises, you have ovulated. A really good app to use to log this is fertility friend. I'd really suggest you do this if your anxious. You must buy a basal body thermometer (from Amazon) as it goes to 2 decimal places and the shift is very subtle.

A short luteal phase can be a problem with fertility if it's 9 days or less as the uterine lining doesn't have time to thicken enough for the fertilised egg to attach. There are things your doctor can prescribe to extend the luteal phase if it did prove to be short but they would do hormone testing first. It's usually associated with very short cycles of 23 days or less regularly (not just a one off like this).

I wrote my masters thesis on ovulation. Your cycle doesn't raise any flags at all to me.

@sylbunny sorry to derail but is it a bad sign if my cycle is usually 25-28 daysand now for the past 3 months or so its been 40 or 41days long between periods? I dont know whats happening and im scared to go to mY ob gyn cause he ll think im mental and maybe its not serious enough to worry about? Sorry..plesse just looking for advice what it means

HelenHywater · 19/07/2021 16:51

How old are you? My luteal phase shortened when I got to 40. But it happened over months - you'd have to wait a few months to see if its a trend or just a one off.

Yeah it's always when you want to wear those white linen trousers or white shorts in amazing hot weather!
Emmelina · 19/07/2021 18:00

As a one off it’s not something I’d be concerned about. But keep logging them!

66babe · 19/07/2021 18:07

Just to add to @sylbunny excellent info
A "normal " cycle is anything from 21-42 days
Most of us think it should be 28 but .. no

Not necessarily no. Mine was pretty regular at around 32 days until I started trying to conceive my first and then it went to over 40 - I suspect I was stressing myself out a bit! It just means that you need to be conscious of when you might be ovulating if your trying to conceive as your ovulation is probably later than you expect!

romany4 · 19/07/2021 19:38

How old are you?

I'm in peri menopause and my periods can range from 19 days right up to 40.
I never know from month to month when it will come

Maydaybankholiday · 19/07/2021 22:12

I have 23/24 day cycles and I'm very fertile.
Also after my vaccine I was 10 days late which has never happened before so it may well go back to your usual

romdowa · 19/07/2021 22:18

Mine were 28 days and them changed to every 21 days and we had no issues conceiving.
