Help Dating a guy who's otherwise perfect but

He has bad breath!

What do I do? Anyone been in this situation?
I'm pretty shy in nature. The first few times I noticed it I put it down to one offs and him drinking coffee.

I have stayed over his twice now and he doesn't brush his teeth much.

🙁 I know people will say just tell him but I've seen his bathroom and he has a brush and toothpaste but as he's like more than 5 years older than me don't know if it's worth telling someone to floss, brush more use mouth wash and tongue clean.

He's literally perfect apart from this.

Also to add he's not brushed his teeth before bed once. On one morning he used like a lush teethy tab that was like a cola flavoured tablet thing and says it so his coffee doesn't taste minty 😫

When he has brushed it still smells. Last time was the worst just sitting next to him and I could smell it.

I'd be honest. Snogging someone with bad breath is the worst, and he may just be totally unaware.

Whattodotho · 28/06/2021 08:24

Yeah I think you're right I'm just so shy not sure how say it in person or msg?

Yeah he was trying snog me when we woke up and honestly smelt like poo.

I been wondering how the hell he's single and maybe this is it. His body is always so clean so it's really bizarre his oral hygiene so bad.

Yeah he was trying snog me when we woke up and honestly smelt like poo. If you’re not able to tell him, what about if you pulled away and said ‘eww, morning breath, go and brush your teeth then come back to bed’ Or if he kisses you during the day, ask him if he’s got toothache because you can smell something when he kisses you and you think he might need to see a dentist.

He might get a bit defensive through embarrassment but he’ll either sort it out, or he won’t, in which case you then need to decide if you can put up with it.

JustGiveMeGin · 28/06/2021 08:42

Well, if you want this to go anywhere you will have to say something! When I started dating my husband he used to have Friday night chill outs without having a shower after working a very physical job. I think I told him the first week (approx 1 week after I met him) that if he expected me to stay over and get in bed with him he would be having a shower!
Never missed one since Wink

Whattodotho · 28/06/2021 08:52

Thank you for your replies and suggestions!
I stayed over on the weekend and I brushed my teeth in morning and we had coffee and I said oooh I need to brush mine again I can still taste the coffee sorta thing. I went for a wee and I could hear him brushing and he snogged me when he came back in and honestly still smelled bad and his lips always have like scum on if that makes sense I bit his lip in sex and I had like a layer under my teeth. 😫

Ah god. Cringing really hard. He doesn't wear any sort of body spray or aftershave. So it makes it even more prominent.

I think he's just neglected him self over years he's raised 2 young kids by himself not an excuse as many people have but even like his underwear and some his clothes you can tell he probably doesn't buy stuff for himself very often. I don't want to like change him or tell him what to do but I feel this early on you showing yourself at your very best.

BitPutOffNow123 · 28/06/2021 09:20

I had like a layer under my teeth that just made me retch. Tell him

Whattodotho · 28/06/2021 09:29

Yeah it was bad. He uses lots of moisturiser and think it's on his lips alot as tastes like it. Would you say in person or over msg? I think he needs like dental gloss a tongue scraper and just the whole works as when he does brush it doesn't do much.

OP posts:
Whattodotho · 28/06/2021 09:30

I thought about maybe leaving a pack of dental gloss and mouth wash buy he might not get the hint ugh

Thinkingoutsidethebox · 28/06/2021 09:31

Sounds like he has a cavity, a rotting tooth, problems with bacteria beneath a crown, that sort of thing. You'd be doing him a massive favour just suggesting he speaks to a dentist because he could be in danger of losing a tooth.
Just say that you've had it before when you had a problem with one of your teeth and that you recognise the specific smell. Only a little white lie.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/06/2021 09:32

I wonder if he's got a few bad teeth? That would explain why the brushing isn't getting rid of the smell. Can you ask if he can recommend his dentist as you're looking for a new one and see if he's even registered?

Underpaidsnackbitch · 28/06/2021 09:33

I think you need to say something before you get the ick permanently. If he kicks off and refuses to address the issue then he obviously isn't the one.

Sakurami · 28/06/2021 09:33

I would message him that he's absolutely perfect in every way but he needs to sort his oral hygiene.

Inthesameboatatmo · 28/06/2021 09:47

A layer under your teeth!!!! Omg op that is fuckin grim and definitely not envy.
I wouldn't go near him until his oral hygiene habits were basic at best .
Maybe he has a bad tooth or maybe he has halitosis.
Try some cb12 (sp) mouth wash stuff and see if that helps.
But honestly if you are sharing and then you shouldn't be uneasy a out daying something.

Inthesameboatatmo · 28/06/2021 09:48

Sharing a bed that was meant to say

Whattodotho · 28/06/2021 09:52

Thank you so much for all your responses. I think I just got to say something 😫 I've met up with him 6 times now. He's had long term relationships why hadn't anyone told him 😂. Could it mayve be coffee he drinks a lot of it?

I have struggled with bad breath when I was younger as have big tonsils and didn't know food could get in there. So I could do the we thing so he doesn't feel so embarrassed.

Got feeling he never brushes before bed though which is giving me the ick. He's so nice gives me full body massages 😂

OP posts:
Inthesameboatatmo · 28/06/2021 10:02

Tonsils.
That's could maybe be tonsils stones as well ,they smell like absolute shit ,I've had similar but I dont have tonsils but it was grim to say the least.
Hope telling him goes ok.

Whattodotho · 28/06/2021 10:49

Yeah it could be that. Thank you. I'll tell him 😫

OP posts:
DivorcingDad · 28/06/2021 11:19

As embarrassing as it is, please tell him.

I would be mortified if I had bad breath and no-one told me. It'll be embarrassing for you both initially but I'm sure he'll thank you in the end.

Jason118 · 28/06/2021 11:26

As someone who suffered without knowing (your own nose desensitises you), the best thing that happened was someone told me. Just tell him, in a caring way, he'll thank you for it in the end.

Heatherjayne1972 · 28/06/2021 12:11

You’ve got to tell him. Straight out. There’s no other way
If his breath smells like poo he’s likely got gum disease. He needs a hygienist

SpeakingFranglais · 28/06/2021 12:14

I think he needs a good dentist or fresh breath clinic
m00rfarm · 28/06/2021 12:19

I had to stop reading when you said you had a layer of skin under your teeth ... honestly, you should see my face (my partner is looking at me as though I am crazy!) tell him. The worst that can happen is that he ditches you. The best is that he listens and goes to the dentist. You have nothing to lose (other than a layer of his lip skin under your teeth ...)

Whattodotho · 28/06/2021 12:33

I know I think I might be getting the ick from that moment alone. I will tell him but got a feeling it might have to be it for now. When we were talking before meeting up he did actually ask what are like main things with attraction to guys ad essential and I said something like confidence, funny and that good hygiene is really important to me.
