My bf has sent a text, nothing explicit just flirting with someone he has known for years, obviously I can't tell him how I feel as he'll know and then change his password so I can't track any future messages.
I asked if he'd heard from this person recently and he said 'Oh no not for a year'. So it was an outright lie as I'd seen the evidence.
It just makes me so angry and insecure.

Is flirting not bad enough? He had lied about contact which isn't good either.
If you don't trust him to cut all contact then it's no good for your own well being to stay with him.

What do you mean by flirting? And if you were snooping before finding the message then either somethings already worried you or the relationship isn't going to last anyway

I feel once you have to check phones/msgs/social media the relationship is basically dead in the water. But then he lied to you so for me that would be it, it would be over.
