Anyone had termination then successfully had pregnancy many years later?

I’m feeling sick about this. Termination in late twenties and now late thirties. I am worried that it means I won’t be able to get pregnant as it’s so many years later? I have been for scans and checks and told things look ok, no real comment. But I wonder if the termination maybe speeded up the time of fertility I would otherwise have had?

Not personally, but I know several people who have. A termination wouldn’t impact on later fertility unless there was some damage caused at the time - which is extremely unlikely, birth is much more dangerous.

No issues for me either. I went on to have two DCs with no issues conceiving/complications. I really wouldn't worry, it should have no bearing on your fertility.

smeerf · 15/05/2021 19:27

Termination at 19 and then fell immediately pregnant both times I tried, gave birth age 31 and 33. Like you I was irrationally worried about fertility but had no issues at all.

I had a termination in my 20s and an op for an ectopic pregnancy in my 30s. But two successful pregnancies with healthy babies.

Maggiesfarm · 15/05/2021 19:30

Other posters are correct, having an abortion does not hasten the end of fertility. Lots of women have babies after a previous termination, I am one.

12 years after an abortion, I had my dd and then 3 siblings followed. All born within 6.5 years.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 15/05/2021 19:38

It won't make any difference. I think they use the same method for abortion that they use for missed miscarriages, I had a couple of those and still got pregnant, it took time but we had other issues....

It's sometimes takes longer to get pregnant in the late 30's than late 20's but that's to do with age! Saying that, many women in late 30's and early 40's get pregnant straight away with no issues.

Good luck if you are thinking of trying!

Oh I have many friends (at least 5) who have had successful pregnancies after terminations.
Do you feel you might benefit from some kind of counselling regarding this? A few of my friends had unresolved feelings about their terminations which really became quite strong when they went on to have subsequent pregnancies. Especially when they reached certain mile stones such as the point at which they terminated previous pregnancies.
Perhaps you could speak to your GP about it x

Yes. I had a termination at 19/20, then a healthy pregnancy with no issues at 32. Also got pregnant easily in 2nd month of trying. I too was worried that it wouldn't happen for me, but no issues. It shouldn't affect your fertility, OP Flowers

My mother had a second trimester termination when she was 18. I'm her "first" and was born when she was 29.

noblegreenk · 16/05/2021 07:52

I jad a termination when I was 24 and had a successful pregnancy and birth when I was 33. I did worry about it a little when we were trying to conceive but it was unfounded.

Rebelwithverysharpclaws · 16/05/2021 16:00

I had a termination in my twenties and a baby at 38 with no problems conceiving. However, in my early thirties I was very much wanting a child and started to get irrationally guilty about the termination - that went away once I conceived.

sparemonitor · 16/05/2021 18:12

GP here. I have lots and lots of patients who have had TOPs then gone on to have pregnancies.

Ispywithmycynicaleye · 16/05/2021 18:56

I had a surgical termination mid 20's. Had a mc nearly 10 years later but I was on the pill, not trying and didnt even know I was pregnant when it happened. Still went on to have 2 back to back pregnancies in my late 30's. Pregnant first try with both.

FeelVeryAwkward · 16/05/2021 21:10

I felt like this OP,

I had to have a medical abortion at 24 weeks with my 1st. I had 3 early miscarriages within a year of having him and convinced myself it was because I had the abortion.

Fell pregnant 15 months after having him & found out I had PCOS and had a healthy daughter. Had 2 miscarriages within 9 months after having my DD and 14 months after she was born fell pregnant again and had a healthy DS

I have a friend who had an abortion in her early 20's, shes in her 30's now and struggling to conceive and also blames it on the abortion she had, I think we want to blame somthing and end up blaming ourselves, when in reality it's pure luck if you have a full term healthy pregnancy

FeelVeryAwkward · 16/05/2021 21:12

Also - my sister is in her 30's and trying to conceive. Shes been for tests/scans, her partners been checked out and everything is fine with both of them but their still struggling to conceive

Depending on your age I think age can also be a big factor

CupoTeap · 16/05/2021 21:12

Yes, had one in teens, 2 D.C. in 30s

Notreallysure25 · 17/05/2021 01:33

Hi, I had one at 23, I now have 3 beautiful teenage children. I used to have the same worries, thought if I ever did want a child I'd have problems (I felt like that because I did had feelings of guilt for a long time). I now look at it as if I had kept it at the time I wouldn't have the lovely children I have now. I didn't have any issues getting pregnant at all.

starrynight21 · 17/05/2021 02:07

Had two surgical terminations in my teens. Had DD at 27, DS at 31. No problems with fertility . I'm not aware that there is any connection between terminations and fertility at all.
