WTF does this emoji mean from a man?!?!

😊

???

I’m overthinking I know, but it’s driving me insane.

I’ve recently called it a day with a relationship (and I’m fine, no drama, no heartache, wasn’t as serious as what I was looking for) but met this 😊 guy once before lockdown at a get together for some friends. We’ve friends in common but they aren’t super close friends of either of us. He’s an acquaintance but we’ve WhatsApped back and forward in lockdown and spoke once on the phone (I bought something for a shared hobby from him) before mainly moving to WhatApp texts. It was a nice phone call, the conversation was easy, we made each other laugh.

I find him physically attractive, he’s got a brilliant reputation as a decent, good man, and he’s generally a brilliant communicator. I’d be interested in meeting up to see if there is any proper chemistry. We’ve got a lot in common. We are both single, no kids and mid 30s.

I got it into my head a while back that he “just wasn’t that into me” or whatever that silly book was called. He sends long messages but I never got a flirtatious vibe. I’d really put him out of my head and then he sent me a message earlier this week (about a mutual interest), volunteering more info about himself than usual and, like most of his messages, peppered with 😊.
As in “Hey there, Ruth 😊” “please take care of yourself, stay safe 😊”

whenever I’ve messaged him first he always says “it’s really lovely to hear from you 😊”. I’ve had the odd 😉 from him...but usually not in any flirty situation...more like “hope braving the shops was worth it 😉”. Generally our communication is about our mutual interest and mutual friends.

Is the 😊 emoji significant in any way?! Is it some sort of secret “wink wink nudge nudge” code? Does it mean “hello I am unthreatening and like you as a friend please do not try and get in my boxers Smile”?

By not communicating with emojis at all in response am I fucking anything up?!

Please help a hopeless gal out!

If it wasn’t for this stupid pandemic, we probably would have been at a few events together and I’d be able to tell in person whether there’s anything there or not and I’d have asked him out if there was. But as it is, it’s all a bit awkward.

Based on previous use of this emoji one guy turned into an obsessive sort who was super “into me” which was alarming and the other turned out to be gay and in the closet.

I doubt either is the case with this fella but I guess I’m shit at emoji deciphering Confused.

I use that one all the time! Not dating but just to friends. Affection/happy smile.

PhilCornwall1 · 30/04/2021 07:01

I have received one with 🍆 👅 but I knew exactly where I stood. My OH likes aubergines and we were having some for tea!!

DonLewis · 30/04/2021 07:07

I think you should tell him what you're thinking.

Hey Dave, I've enjoyed chatting to you. Wanna go for a drink? Only, I can't figure out the point of the smug little fucker of an emoji you keep putting in your messages means. Are you into me?

ShadierThanaPalmTree · 30/04/2021 07:11

Oh god, when I was first dating my DP he was terrible for this but with the wink emoji. It would be like "Hey Shadier, I hope you had a good day 😉"

It left me in a constant state of WTF?! Do you actually hope I had a good day or? It was inappropriately placed and dotted around his messages, and I never knew if he liked me or if he was just struggling a bit as Engliah isn't his first language 😂😂 It turns out that was his shodddy attempts to flirt with me.

Apparently English isn't my first language either 🙃
Snapbacktonormality · 30/04/2021 07:16

I’d use it where I felt affection but not yet ready to put a xx at the end of the message.

I love new emoji day after a system upgrade 🤓

Beautiful3 · 30/04/2021 07:17

It's just a smile. I use that for people I know well but dont want to put kisses.

Anonmousse · 30/04/2021 07:24

Me and a (female) friend use the laughing emoji quite a lot as in 🤣🤣 or 😂
According to DD this is very old people-ish!Blush
And a red heart emoji means something else for teens but I didnt understand what Blush
But never heard of the family emoji meaning something else....

Anonmousse · 30/04/2021 07:26

Family emoji?? Smily emoji!!

SelkieIntegrated · 30/04/2021 07:29

Ha ha im laughing at the poster who used to sign off with turds!
My x hated emojis! He'd ring me up to ask "what does that mean?" and then ask that i just type that next time. He was good at reading emotions and expressions on people but not on emojis

alliejay81 · 30/04/2021 07:31

It's the default smile if you type : ) on windows. Half my work emails include one, including in an email exchange with my CEO last night so I hope there's no alternate meaning Grin

ShowOfHands · 30/04/2021 07:36

I rarely use emojis but if I do, it's almost always that one op. I am using it as a friendly, warm smile and friends use it the same way.

There's no point constantly analysing a smiley face. If you want to know if he's interested in more, just use words and ask him.

OnGoldenPond · 30/04/2021 07:39

My best male friend always signs off WhatsApp messages to me with 😘. Been best mates for over 30 years and he has never shown any signs of wanting to flirt with me!

EvenMoreFuriousVexation · 30/04/2021 07:39

@Anonmousse
And a red heart emoji means something else for teens but I didnt understand what

I've witnessed teen girls using it to mean they're menstruating. Like, "Ugh i cba today it's ❤️ week"

OP, its just a smiley face. It's probably the first one that comes up on his emoji keyboard so he just uses that all the time. I love your description of it though 🤣

captainpantbeard · 30/04/2021 07:46

If he uses the hug emoji he wants to honk your tits 🤗

Anonmousse · 30/04/2021 07:49

DD described as a response to something or a sarcastic thing?Confused

CandyLeBonBon · 30/04/2021 07:49

@GeorgiaGirl52

Maybe he just doesn't "speak" emoji. I used to sign my texts to my granddaughter with flowers, lollipops, and chocolate kisses. Then her mother told me the "chocolate kisses" were actually turds. Blush
😂😂😂
Doghead · 30/04/2021 07:58

Jeez! It's a friggin smile. Most people use them. Are you usually so paranoid?

champagnetruffleshuffle · 30/04/2021 08:09

My daughter has been educating me. Apparently no one young uses the laughing emoji when something is funny. You are meant to use 😭 and if it's really funny you use 💀... God knows!!

MotherOfGodHoulYerWhisht · 30/04/2021 08:16

Paranoid? I think you mean analytical 💅🏻
Camphillgirl · 30/04/2021 08:44

Some of us are ignorant of the “meanings” of emojis and think we are being cool and trendy by using them. Don’t read anything into it. Just being friendly.

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 30/04/2021 08:51

The absence of full stops is sinister though, don't you think?

ShadierThanaPalmTree · 30/04/2021 14:46

@captainpantbeard

If he uses the hug emoji he wants to honk your tits 🤗
🤣🤣 honk honk
sofato5miles · 30/04/2021 14:50

The ansence of full atops has been shown to mean a more sincere message. When you place a full stop the message is seen as false or insincere.

I miss you

I miss you.
