Paying costs

My solicitor wrote to me yesterday day saying that the judge said I have to pay my ex husbands costs for divorce. We at DN stage. Unless I contest it the judge will grant it.

I work part time and on universal credit. The children live full time with me.

I can’t afford to pay for him to divorce me.

I was domestically abused for 6 years by this man. Yet he claims it was me (he has no evidence of this as it didn’t happen).

I literally am in despair. My solicitor wrote to me at 1621 last night to tell me this and that my deadline to respond is today!!!!

What will realistically happen?

Why has the judge said you have to pay his costs?
What is the usual Position?
Does your solicitor advise objecting, or appealing that decision?
It sounds unusual, you need to speak to your solicitor to understand what has happened.

Apparently they can’t represent me due to some legal aid issue. Even though I thought I had full legal aid. I obviously will be calling them today.

He has asked that I pay costs when he applied for the divorce. So that’s why. It’s shocking.

It’s a checkbox on the divorce forms and I think they’ll be awarded by default unless the respondent (you) contests it.

Check with the solicitor, but I don’t think it means his legal costs are covered, “just” the court fees (but I’m not a lawyer so def check that).

Hope you get it sorted today.
