Our mortgage is up for renewal soon and we are considering whether to stay or move. We currently own a 3 bed semi in the home counties where housing is pricy. Just the two of us, no children, so no schools to consider. No need to live near family. We want to upgrade to a 3-4 bed house with garage. Budget around £300k so we can retire earlier. We both now have official, permanent 'Work from home' jobs so it makes sense to move somewhere cheaper...any suggestions?

This thread is inspired from an existing thread from Chipsahoy about the lovely house in Middlesbrough. Our budget isn't set in stone, more of a 'like to aim for'.

We need more details.

What do you like? Coast, land, busy, rural?

Do you want detached for that money? How far away from your current location are you prepared to move?

What happens if one or both of you lose your job? Do you need to be near a city? Are WFH jobs common in your fields?

If this is a long term plan then I would wait until Covid is over and travel. Have weekends away and get a feel for areas. It's easy for people to give an area but it's personal.

So - anywhere in England or anywhere in UK ?

City / Smaller Town / Village / Completely rural ?

Do you want to be within easy reach of anything..... coast, mountains, a large City. motorway, airport, etc et ?

Presumably if wfh you need good internet ? (or not ?)

Can you post the thread about Middlesbrough please. I’m thinking of moving that way

Hexuba · 11/02/2021 00:05

Preferably England but would consider the rest of the UK. I think our only serious requirement is good broadband for work. I'm the main earner and work in a niche industry that priorities skills and experience over location. Even though we'd like a detached property, we'd happily concede on that for more floorspace, a higher finish or better amenities.

Take a look at North Lakes/Penrith area of Cumbria. Your budget would stretch nicely, in the Lake District within minutes, easy access to M6 and good rail links as it's on the west coast main line so Glasgow within 2h and London within 4h on the fast train...

There is probably nowhere in Britain you will get more 'bang for your buck' than Blackpool.

Liverpool. I bought one for 100k less than that.

Perfect

Lampan · 12/02/2021 08:28

@MechantGourmet

Why 4 bed if you've no children?
Maybe they want to use bedrooms as offices? Maybe they have big families or lots of friends who would visit in normal times? Or loads of stuff to store? Or they just want a larger house? There are loads of reasons.
MechantGourmet · 12/02/2021 09:06

I just asked because unless there's a pressing reason for four, they're more likely to manage 3-bed and garage for £300k than 4-bed, that's all. They'll have a much wider choice.

MoreHairyThanScary · 12/02/2021 10:08

Agree with others what are your priorities
Rural or town

What doe you want Devon has lots of properties around the 300k Mark but what are your other needs...
