Contraception after baby

Second born is now 1 and husband and I have not dtd since she was conceived. Both of us feel we have completed our family and are fearful of an unexpected pregnancy. This is a big barrier at the moment. I’m overweight and worried about hormonal changes and gaining more weight with contraception. Has anyone found a reliable method they trust?

Why doesn’t he get a vasectomy, if he is sure he doesn't want any more children ? That would be the most reliable method.

Book an appointment with family planning nurse at your GP practice. I was on Depo Provera injections and gained lots of weight. After a consultation, she recommended me a switch to Evra contraception patches and they have worked great. Very happy. I hadn’t realised the injections were making me feel low and irritable... such a positive change when I stopped those.

Vasectomy all the way!

I started with the Depo Provera for about a year, moved on to a Mirena coil, which worked really well, then moved to a copper coil, which also worked well for me. I now need to get this removed as I don't need contraception anymore.

I had a mirena coil put in when I had my son. Was only 5 weeks ago so not sure yet how I’m getting on with it but I think it’s generally one with fewer side effects than the pill or injection. I like that I won’t even have to think about it.

Nuva ring. I had issues with coil - one fell out, one has left me with long term nerve pain. Nuva ring has same benefits of low, location based hormone but you just have to replace it once a month.
