how do I hide my google search history?

Google has started bringing up my recent searches when I click on it.

How do I stop this? I don't want my husband to see my searches.

three dots top right of browser. Click 'more tools' Click 'Clear browsing data'

MulticolourMophead · 16/08/2020 16:04

If you're using Firefox, click the 3 lines on the extreme right at the top, select Options, select Privacy and Security, and scroll down to cookies and data.

You can clear all your browsing data there, and also tick a box to make sure Firefox deletes the data whenever you close your browser.

smallbitofbark · 16/08/2020 16:15

Thanks. When I have done this before it clears historic data, but keeps creating a new list of my recent browsing history - is there a way to stop it doing this so that I don't need to keep clearing it?

I expect there is something in settings. MulticolourMophead has said how to do it for Firefox. You probably need to say what browser you use to get instructions specific to yours. You can always open incognito windows through the three dots in top lefthand corner. In incognito mode no browsing data is recorded. Though if your OH can see your screen it might look suspicious as incognito windows look quite different to normal ones.

lurkingattheback · 16/08/2020 16:25

You need to search in private mode, then it doesn't record your history.

daisychain1620 · 16/08/2020 16:29

What are you searching that you don't want hubby to see?

pog100 · 16/08/2020 16:39

Which browser are you using? They all have some sort of incognito mode.

AudTheDeepMinded · 16/08/2020 16:41

@daisychain what's that got to do with it, nosy besom?

smallbitofbark · 16/08/2020 16:56

google chrome. I think - not IT literate as you can see.

When you’re searching something hidden you can turn on private browsing. It won’t save anything

LemonDrizzles · 16/08/2020 17:10

Or you could just use an incognito tab which would not create any history

Kittykat93 · 16/08/2020 17:16

Doesn't matter what op is searching :s I'm not a liar or a cheat but I still wouldnt want by partner seeing all my Google history, we are entitled to privacy!

beenwhereyouare · 16/08/2020 18:19

Be really careful of two things.

Although Incognito searches don't show up in your regular search history, things you search from a regular tab will show up in your private browsing.

Also, your google account may be linked across all devices, which in my case means what I search on my tablet shows up in search history on my phone. I can't remember for sure but it seems like deleting them one place did not clear the other. I think I'm going to unsync the two of them.

daisychain1620 · 16/08/2020 19:07

I know lol I'm just being nosy and don't really care what op is googlingGrin.

heartsonacake · 16/08/2020 19:10

Just switch to using incognito mode permanently then; problem solved.

PercyKirke · 16/08/2020 23:44

In googlechrome, click on the 3 dots at top RH of screen. Click on History in the dropdown box. Then when new screen appears click on History again that will bring up a 3rd screen with a "clear history" option. Click on that. Job done.

When doing a future search, click on the 3 dots again and click "new incognito window" that allows searches with no history on your devices.

Thank you @PercyKirke - learnt something new today.

Perhaps get in the habit of clearing browsing history every time you use internet or go incognito (private browsing).

Also be aware that the router can be used to monitor your internet activity - including Google searches (as the search result comes up as it's own webpage).

Yes there are other wags to see your history. Can you give a little more detail? If you Are scared of your husband Youd get different advice than if youre buying him a secret present.
