Prison pen pal

Hi I am thinking of writing to a prisoner. Does anyone know of how to get this started? And if you have done it yourself what was the experience like? Preferably in the uk. Thanks in advance

I don't know about being a pen pal but my mother was a prison visitor for many years. She did this through her church. She found it really rewarding and the prisoners always seemed to look forward to her visits although she did get some strange requests from them from time to time.

prisonfellowship.org.uk offer you a chance to get a pen friend who is in prison. From what I understand (haven't taken part in the scheme myself) you need to undergo training before you are allowed to write to them.

I had one years ago but he was in America. The website writeaprisoner is where I found him and some of them have tablets so you can email them.

How was your experience talking to him? Does it cost money? X

It’s free to post letters direct to them (apart from paying for the postage) but think it cost about £3 per email if I was communicating with him through JPAY.
He fell in love with me and became very needy and jealous. I’ve known other people who have had the same experience too. They don’t get to speak to females much/ever so they get carried away and very attached quickly so be wary x

Would it be better to write to someone , that you wouldn't be likely to get in a relationship ,ie a female prisoner ? Supporting a mother or young person ?

GilbertMarkham · 13/05/2020 11:42

Why do you want to do this?

Can I ask why you put this question in the relationships topic? Was that a mistake or would you see this as a way of forming a sort of relationship?
