When do you need to know if he loves you?

You're seeing how it goes, but at what point do you hit that crossroad and decide enough is enough you're either together or you're not? At what point are you no longer satisfied to be "seeing someone" and you need to know you're in a valid relationship? Six months? Two years?

I would say after a few months you should know where you stand, definitely not 2 years!

I think that a conversation needs to be had at the point one half of the couple is feeling really anxious about the relationship status.

It's more a compatibility thing that shows if you're on the same page or not, there isn't a standard amount of time or set deadline.
