Valentine's Day

Hoping to guage a few people's thoughts on Valentine's Day and gifts. Me and my ex (fairly long term relationship) never really celebrated valentine's. I've been seeing somebody since November time and we decided to do something as neither of us have done before.
I was just thinking about gifts and what women in general feel about them (especially in an early relationship). Obviously, everyone is different (obvious statement of the year) but thought it doesn't hurt to ask. Are flowers (Roses I imagine) something that you would like to receive?
Just interested in people's thoughts really. I've got a couple of ideas, but it's early on in the relationship and I wondered what your experiences have been.

I’d love flowers.

LadyGAgain · 09/02/2020 22:47

Flowers - definitely and whilst cliche, red roses on valentines are lovely!

Underwear - not this early on.

Dinner out - wonderful!

Jane1978xx · 09/02/2020 22:49

Flowers or a plant like a orchid I would like. Or champagne if you know they like it.

cherryblossomgin · 09/02/2020 22:53

Flowers are nice unless she has cats. Why not go in her bathroom and see what products she uses and buy it for her. Or some fancy chocolates.

caulkheaded · 09/02/2020 22:56

I’ve been seeing someone since new year and we’re celebrating Valentine’s Day by going out to my favourite restaurant (he asked and then booked). I will give him some food he really likes but wouldn’t expect anything other than dinner (although would love flowers sent to my work 😳)

Pilot12 · 09/02/2020 22:58

A meal out on Valentines Day and flowers or chocolates would be nice.

TrueFriendsStabYouInTheFront · 09/02/2020 22:59

Would second flowers sent to work! Flowers, chocolates and a meal out would be perfect! If you wanted to really push the boat out, perfume as well

Jane1978xx · 09/02/2020 22:59

Roses are ok for cats

Barkley34 · 09/02/2020 22:59

Cheers. Some good ideas.

She does have cats. You think they'll eat them? I've seen flowers at hers before.

Friday night we will actually just be round her place as she can't get a babysitter, but we are going out for our own 'Valentine's' the week after.

Underwear . . . definitely not yet. Ha.

We’re going out to a local restaurant and I hate to sound so grabby but I will be disappointed if flowers are not delivered to my office at some point during the day

Mumteedum · 09/02/2020 23:03

I'd be happy with a card and we're a year in. I'm not even banking on that tbh. I loved valentines day when I was single. Was so liberating not giving a toss.

ILikePaperHats · 09/02/2020 23:04

Cool her dinner at yours. Steak or chicken in a nice sauce followed by something chocolatey. Personally I think bringing flowers or going out to a restaurant on Valentine's Day is a bit corny. Not to mention expensive!

caulkheaded · 09/02/2020 23:06

What flowers does she like? I’m ambivalent about roses but love other things. So it would be nice if he gave roses but I’d want them because he thought I liked them rather than “having to give them because it’s valentines”

ILikePaperHats · 09/02/2020 23:06

Sorry just read your update. Cook dinner at hers! Buy all the shopping and wine beforehand. Can you cook?

LadyGAgain · 09/02/2020 23:10

No issues with cats and flowers other than lilies as the stems (pollen) can poison them.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 09/02/2020 23:17

I'm not sure about red roses. They're a bit of a cliché and around Valentine's Day they're absurdly expensive. When DH bought them for me one year when we were skint I bollocked him for ostentatious extravagance. Only you will know if this reaction is a possibility.

I would suggest a stunning hand tied bouquet of mixed flowers, preferably in a colour scheme that will look good in her house.

I like the suggestion of going into her bathroom and finding out which fragrance she wears. Or you could simply say "You smell delicious, which perfume are you wearing?" A scent she already loves is a thoughtful present, personal but not pushy.

Personally I love having flowers sent to my work. Colleagues admire them and I have to admit I bask in the attention. It's a bit of a fuss being made of me.

Dashel · 09/02/2020 23:22

What about a night away when you can or a family valentines picnic with some dreamies for the cats and a hamper for the humans?!

Barkley34 · 09/02/2020 23:24

I'm decent at cooking tbf.

I'll probably do something nice for us with her favourite wine. I'll have a think about roses/flowers.

Me and my partner just do dinner and a card. We don't go overboard in the slightest.

Last year he sent me some roses, but that's not normal - he just wanted to surprise me with something really nice!

bitheby · 09/02/2020 23:27

Yes. Lilies are deadly poisonous to cats so don't buy them.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 10/02/2020 05:34

It's only the lily pollen that's poisonous to cats and the stamens are easily removed. My cats have coexisted with lilies much of my adult life.

Alfiemoon1 · 10/02/2020 07:21

It’s all of Lily’s that are poisonous to cats not just the stamens so I would avoid them roses are traditional on valentines days

SimonJT · 10/02/2020 07:27

Lots of flowers are poisonous to cats, make sure none of the flowers on the link below are in a bunch of flowers.

Flowers are always a good bet. Personally Roses wouldn't be my favourite but in a new relationship it would be romantic. If I had to choose my favourite it would be chocolates, LOVE chocolates, especially Ferrero Roche. Oh god I see you can cook, getting a meal cooked for me would heaven ..
