Mate's girlfriend lying to him about pregnancy

Apologies if i've got this totally wrong. A workmate of mine has been really stressed for about 10 days, I asked him what was up and he said his girlfriend might be pregnant. I asked if they had taken a test and he said yes but the result came up negative.

I suggested they take another one, but in order to be 100% sure, go to the Drs. I didn't see him until a week later. I asked if there had been any updates and he said she still didn't know if she was pregnant or not, that they needed to 'wait for the test results'.

Apparently the Dr had told her that he 'wouldn't carry out a pregnancy test until her home test showed a positive result.'

I may be wrong but pregnancy tests at the Drs are instant, aren't they ? I was offered one there and then, and got the result there and then ?

I can't imagine any doctor refusing to carry out a pregnancy test based on a home kit ? They aren't always accurate, and as far as I know, any female can walk into a family planning clinic and request a pregnancy test.

I asked if he was with her when the Dr told her all this and he said no, she went on her own.

I don't understand how they can 'still be waiting for test results'. I feel like she's lying to him, this seems odd what she's saying. Just don't get why ?

Na she’s bullshitting. Don’t question yourself. You know how it works

CatalogueUniverse · 21/12/2019 19:43

Unless it’s a blood test the ones at the doctors aren’t any different from home tests I think.

My doctor confirmed my test with a urine test before booking me in with a midwife.

Raphael34 · 21/12/2019 19:43

Sounds plausible to me. And you can’t just walk into a doctors and ‘request’ anything

LIZS · 21/12/2019 19:43

Gp probably would not bother with a test at such an early stage unless there was reason to suspect an issue like ectopic pg.

Taylorisme5 · 21/12/2019 19:44

Do blood test results take longer then ?
I cannot imagine a Dr refusing to offer a pregnancy test. The whole thing seems odd.

You can walk into a family planning clinic on a drop-in to request a pregnancy test.

Here doctors won’t do a blood test or a urine test unless you’ve had a mixed set of your own tests, you’ve gotten positives and are bleeding or you’re about to get medication that could harm an existing pregnancy and you’re not 100% sure.. ie you haven’t used protection/irregular cycles.

However if she’s late by well over a week and she’s still getting negatives id say it’s unlikely that a test hasn’t picked up a smidge of a line.

CatalogueUniverse · 21/12/2019 19:45

I know someone who had a very late (3weeks after period due) positive test result and was told they wouldn’t do anything until she had a positive test at home. The worry was about ectopic pregnancy. Turned out fine.

So dubious imo.

Aussiebean · 21/12/2019 19:46

I think the home tests are now as good as any urine test the doctors can do.

When I went to make an appointment with the doc they booked me straight with the midwife. Didn’t even test me to confirm.

There is so much information out there that he can check. They need to do another test.

00Sassy · 21/12/2019 19:46

My doctors don’t routinely offer pregnancy tests. They get you to take your own test then when you get a positive they refer you to booking in. Honestly, I’ve had 4 dc and never had a gp confirm my pregnancy with a test of their own.

Blushingm · 21/12/2019 19:47

I worked at sexual health - used urine test exactly the same as you can buy online.

Taylorisme5 · 21/12/2019 19:47

If it's plausible then that's fair enough. I just found the story odd but perhaps there's nothing to be concerned about. I know my friend does not want to become a father but his girlfriend does.

A family planning clinic will usually test you there and then. Both times I've had a positive pregnancy test I simply called my doctors surgery and got booked in with the midwife. I've never had any experience of a pregnancy test at my GP's but I assume that it is something that they are more likely to do with someone who is having certain health issues to rule out pregnancy than someone who has already tested negative at home.

sue51 · 21/12/2019 19:49

You couldn't just walk into my gps and ask for a test. You would need to see the practise nurse and there is a wait at the moment for non urgent procedures. Just take another home test in a few days time. Home tests are very reliable if used correctly.

PurpleDaisies · 21/12/2019 19:49

Doctors don’t test to confirm pregnancy. Home m tests are just as accurate as their tests. This scenario is entirely plausible.

Musti · 21/12/2019 19:49

They've had a negative test so it's negative? They could keep trying home tests

CalleighDoodle · 21/12/2019 19:50

My doctors never in three pregnancies offered me a pregnancy test. They said shop bought ones were fine.

Is he having unprotected sex with her?

Why do you care?

Taylorisme5 · 21/12/2019 19:51

Thanks for the replies, i've learned new things I didn't know, i'm glad it is plausible, I know it's stressful waiting !

He should have sorted his shit out then and if it’s a false alarm I hope he learns that lesson!

Pollaidh · 21/12/2019 19:58

My doctors won't do a pregnancy test, they say the ones you buy in Boots are extremely accurate so there's no point checking.

SnowyUnicorns · 21/12/2019 19:59

Don't forget that the hormones don't kick in until about the time that the period is due if she is pregnant. It is possible that she tested too early. All depends on how regular her normal cycle is.

TiredofthisBS · 21/12/2019 19:59

When I fell pregnant I visited the Doctor to confirm, the dr told me that if the home test said I was pregnant then I was pregnant and that was that.

Taylorisme5 · 21/12/2019 20:00

Honestly had no idea about doctor not doing pregnancy tests. I've only had one myself once at a family planning clinic. I'll know for the future anyway if it ever happens.

Doctors don’t do pregnancy tests much now due to the home ones. I’ve never had a doc test.

Those clear blue digital ones are totally unambiguous though. Unlike the ones where you’re wondering about faint lines. I’d advise him to buy the digital one.

Taylorisme5 · 21/12/2019 20:01

It's quite a scary thing ! I had my last Depo shot 4 months ago and haven't had a period yet but I know they do take time to come back.
