Letting go

Could you let someone go, so that they could be happy. If you knew you weren't making them so. Does it require a certain amount of emotional intelligence to be able to do that?? What if you loved someone, were married to them, but it wasn't enough, and you knew you weren't being the best version of yourself for you or him..how can some couples realise this and move forward with their lives separately and yet others stay and stagnate?
