Have I got social anxiety?

Hi Mumsnetters. I was just looking for a bit of advice about social anxiety. I am getting to the stage where I only want to spend time with a select few people that I am "comfortable" around. Because of my work I have needed to appear at events and parties and I always end up getting so anxious I get an ulcer or have a panic attack and have to leave early. I have never been a social butterfly but these feelings are getting worse. I dread simple things like meeting old friends and large groups. Is this normal? If anyone has any advice it would be very much appreciated :) TIA x

Sounds like it. I have it a bit. Do you take medication? That can help as can CBT courses on how to deal with anxiety.

Hi Debbie, yes it does sound like social anxiety.

I have experienced the same for many year and this year decided I needed to do something about it, as it was affecting my life so much.
I now see a counsellor and understand where my anxiety comes from(trauma in childhood). I found counselling very difficult at first, because like you, I don't like speaking to people, but I've persevered and I'm so glad I did- I just wish I'd done it years ago.

This morning I've accepted an invite to a christmas party. I've said no to this party for the previous 5 years. I'm quite proud of myself Grin

Call your GP. Many areas have self referral clinics For CBT which can really help. I've had panic attacks in the middle of asda and had to walk out and leave my shopping.
