2 key cards for hotel room - normal?

My husband stays in London a lot for work and stays around the city. I found a key card holder and it has 2 keys. I also found another one with 2 keys and someone else’s name written in pen on the front. Can someone tell me if this is normal practice to give 2keys and can there be any explanation for someone else’s name on the front?

I would have thought one key per person staying (and in the hotel register) but if I stay in a hotel on my own, I've always had one key.

OrchidInTheSun · 06/09/2019 10:58

No it isn't. You only get two keys if two people are checking in.

Weenurse · 06/09/2019 10:58

Every place I stay gives 2 cards. One to slide into a slot in the room for activating electricity in the room, the other to be used as a key.
The other name thing is suspicious though

HollowTalk · 06/09/2019 11:00

Activating electricity in the room? Which country was that in?

It was the Andaz Liverpool Street, if anyone happens to know??! Could the name be the person checking them in?

I’ve always had 2 keys.

Loads of hotels do this, you have to put a key card in the slot to allow the electric to come on. In the UK

TheDogIsMyFave · 06/09/2019 11:03

I travel alot for work and usually get given 2 keys. The name on the front could be a previous guest (they re-use key cards!)

whitebowls · 06/09/2019 11:03

The name on the front is the person who the room was booked for.

Sunshineonleith12 · 06/09/2019 11:04

I wouldn't have thought they'd write the name of the other person on the front of the card, I can't see why they'd do that.
Could you phone the hotel and ask if they always issue 2 cards?

codenameduchess · 06/09/2019 11:04

I've often had 2 keys even staying alone, one for the power slot and one for access.
Was the name a full name? And was your husbands name also on it? It could just be the receptionist/concierge wrote their name as an 'if you need anything my name is' kind of thing if just a first name as I've had that before too.

HollowTalk · 06/09/2019 11:04

The person checking them in wouldn't write their name, surely? It sounds like he has two people's key cards - is his own name written on one card?

Oldraver · 06/09/2019 11:05

Crikey I have Forbidden History on in the background and the Andez Hotel has just come on.

Quellium · 06/09/2019 11:05

I wouldn't say it was unusual to be given 2, but I don't know why a name would be written on. Also, why didn't he give them back as he checked out? Is it a serviced apartment?

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 06/09/2019 11:05

I've often had 2 key cards when checking into hotels so I wouldn't think it was uncommon.

I presume however you have suspicions based on more than just the key cards and you think he might be cheating so you are probably looking for more proof.

I've had this several times in the UK. Most recent being a fortnight ago in a Premier Inn.

Any place I've stayed you get one key per person. I've never stayed alone and got 2 keys

Buzzingbee7 · 06/09/2019 11:07

Can you phone the hotel?

PinkLacy · 06/09/2019 11:07

What’s the name?

Spinnaret · 06/09/2019 11:08

Loads of hotels give two key cards. And yes, loads have slots for turning on the electricity in the room.

The different name would be more unusual. But, could he have picked up someone else's off a table or something? Its the sort of thing I would do when tidying a meeting room and then if I don't see the person again, would have it stuffed in a pocket somewhere.

CIareIsland · 06/09/2019 11:08

Google the name.

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/09/2019 11:08

Yes, it's quite normal to be given 2 key cards for only 1 person.

Why does your husband still have the key cards though? And two different sets? You're supposed to give them back, not keep them!

NoBaggyPants · 06/09/2019 11:09

Two keys is not unusual, when I worked in a hotel we'd make up the key packs for next day at night, and they all got two.

Key cards are reused, so if someone has written a name on the card that could be why. Or do you mean it's written on the little folder?

theemmadilemma · 06/09/2019 11:09

I've travelled a lot alone for business. Nearly always given two cards anyway regardless.

And yes having to use it to activate electric is common place is a lot of hotels. So if you want to leave something charging while you are out, it is necessary.

Never seen names written on though, but it wouldn't necessarily worry me. Could just be an old key etc.

slugsinthegarden · 06/09/2019 11:10

I also travel a lot for work and am often given 2 keys as standard.
