2 key cards for hotel room - normal?

Fuckfucketyfuck · 06/09/2019 10:55

My husband stays in London a lot for work and stays around the city. I found a key card holder and it has 2 keys. I also found another one with 2 keys and someone else’s name written in pen on the front. Can someone tell me if this is normal practice to give 2keys and can there be any explanation for someone else’s name on the front?

No it isn't. You only get two keys if two people are checking in

This! Or where you check in and someone joins you later and you have given the person's name to the front desk!

Me and my DH travel a lot so have stayed in a lot of hotels and even when I’m standing next to him at check-in they give us one key card between us. We’ve never been given two without specifically requesting it.

DBML · 06/09/2019 15:53

You don’t trust him op and I don’t blame you.

booboo24 · 06/09/2019 15:56

i travel a lot with work both in the UK and abroad. I nearly always get 2 cards, one to unlock and once for electricity. Just last month I stayed in a Best Western in Montenegro and got given 2 cards, I then stayed at a hotel near Birmingham airport 2 weeks ago and again, got given 2 cards. Whatever else is going on could sway the suspicion level, but this alone means nothing. I can't comment in the name though, that does seem weird....

booboo24 · 06/09/2019 15:57

Also, how has he still got them? If it was anything untoward why would he bring the second one back?

fromthefloorboardsup · 06/09/2019 16:01

I've often had two keys even if staying on my own

ShadyLady53 · 06/09/2019 16:06

I’m another one who travels alone regular, for business and pleasure. I am ALWAYS given two keys, even when the hotel room doesn’t have the carded electricity saver.

dontgobaconmyheart · 06/09/2019 16:06

He sounds dodgy generally OP, but the cards thing is odd - you usually give them back in at checkout for a start let alone why he'd have someone else's.

The two cards is not weird in and of itself though- can't remember the last time I stayed in a city hotel and didn't get two, you often need one for the electricity in budget hotels. I've never had my first name handwritten on the card envelope like that either, or done so myself.

If you don't trust him or even like him why are you with him though, this is no life is it scrabbling around for proof of affairs and womens names on key cards.

ButterflyOne1 · 06/09/2019 16:10

I travel often alone and always ask for two cards. One to leave in the slot to leave the air con/electric on and the other to let myself back in.

I don't think the cards are anything to question but I don't understand why Alex is the name. Could he share a room with a male colleague to save on costs?

You clearly are unhappy in your marriage so I'd just speak to him about how you're feeling.

stucknoue · 06/09/2019 16:13

Sometimes they give you two automatically because you pay per room, other places ask. It's not a "sign" the pen however I cannot comment on

Divebar · 06/09/2019 17:26

If I was staying in a hotel and they felt the need to write anything on the envelope for the card I would not expect my first name.... how bloody unprofessional is that? I would also not expect an affair partner to be checking in. If you were meeting someone in a hotel room they would just tell you the room number and there’d be no reason for you to go to reception. I certainly wouldn’t expect a key to be left with a fancy woman’s name on for collection.... hotels are used for liaisons all the time. They’d have to be thick as mince to do that.

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/09/2019 18:49

I'm still trying to understand why the OP's DH has these multiple key cards. If they're his, why did he never give them back when he checked out? Even if you do express check-out, you're still expected to drop the key cards in a box at reception. You don't just take them home with you. I used to travel a lot with work and have stayed in so many hotels but I've never brought a key card (or two) home with me. That's why I find the weirdest about this story.

The DH seems selfish and unpleasant, regardless of whether he's cheating or not. He can't be bothered to travel home 1 hour so he stays in a hotel? That's someone who has well and truly checked out of his relationship and family life. The OP clearly doesn't trust him either. What kind of miserable relationships is this? You can do better OP.

CursedDiamond · 06/09/2019 18:51

I’ve left with keycards all the time. I just forget...and they don’t always ask

BogglesGoggles · 06/09/2019 18:56

What does it say above Tina?

hittheroadjack1 · 06/09/2019 19:35

I'm always given 2 keys, one for the electricity slot and one for the door.

I thought that was standard?

youwouldthink · 06/09/2019 19:55

The two key cards have been standard practice for me when staying in hotels...about 100 nights per year in several different ones.
However I've never been given the card holder with another name on it.
Hotels are very careful with GDPR and handing over the name of a different guest staying would be very unfortunate

youwouldthink · 06/09/2019 19:56

Oh and the key cards becone void on day of departure at the check out time so no use from then so doesn't matter if taken home

Treesandgreenstuff · 06/09/2019 19:57

Can people stop harping on about not giving the keycards back?
If you check out on TV or don’t even bother to check out, it’s really easy to forget about the keycards and walk out of the hotel with them in your pocket. Keeping hold of the keycards is not significant.
I’ve yet to be chased by hotel staff to relinquish my keycards.

Tangofandango · 06/09/2019 20:50

I always keep the keycards because they have all your info stored on them including any credit cards that been swiped on arrival. I take them home and cut them up.

neverornow · 06/09/2019 21:05

Re the wrong name; happens very easily.

Guest rooms are assigned hours prior to guests checking in (more often than not) so
Key cards are often cut in advance, particularly on a busy shift, and names put on front of card holder prior to guests checking in.
"Alex" may have checked in - then asked to change rooms for some reason - receptionist then swaps Alex's room for the room assigned to OP's DH's room in the system - and then gives OP's DH's key to Alex and vice versa....however receptionist should have wrote out a new key card holder with correct name on it, but may have just forgotten

Also - personal info isn't actually stored on the key cards. It's all in the hotels property management system software, with credit card details encrypted. The key cards literally just let you into the room and are activated for the length of stay only. Most will deactivate after 12pm or whatever time the hotels check out time is.

Clashofclans · 06/09/2019 21:50

I have to get copies of hotel bills all the time for work. Ring them direct and make out you need a copy for his expenses and ask them to email this to you. Should show a breakdown of how many guests and dinner info etc

Weezol · 06/09/2019 21:55

Do you feel you need a firm 'reason' to end it?

m00rfarm · 06/09/2019 22:01

How do you know they are for the same room. Maybe they had a room for working in separate to the individual hotel rooms for sleeping

m00rfarm · 06/09/2019 22:03

At a hotel recently, I needed the room card key to leave the car park (same card) , so I had no way of returning the key.

Tiredtessy · 06/09/2019 22:08

Who books the hotel rooms? Him or his company? If it's someone from the company the hotel has probs just used their name? If he was taking random girls there surely he would just still.book under his name

2 cards is normal to
