Leaving boyfriend

I need some advice...

I’m 26 years old, I’ve been with my boyfriend for 5 years. We have 2 children aged 4 and 4 months, and I just really want to leave but don’t know how.

We have a joint council tenancy. I’ve been told that if I leave I will still be responsible for half the rent, plus I have nowhere to go.

Does anyone know who can help?

You won’t be responsible for half the rent if you leave, if he continues to live there then the rent is his issue to sort. The council can’t demand you pay it, you simply inform them that you’re no longer living there and if there’s arrears they’re to take it up with your partner who still lives there.

You save up for a deposit and get your own place.

If it’s a joint tenancy then you’re as liable as he is, but speak to the council and see if they’ll remove you from the lease.
