What do I say to him?

5 years ago dh went freelance as he was miserable in his job. He was really nervous but I persuaded him as he was so unhappy. 5 years and 2 kids later he enjoys his freelance work but the problem is he just can’t make it pay. It brings in half what he used to make and must be around minimum wage what he earns now. I earn ok so we manage and cover basics fine but no extras. I wouldn’t mind this at all as I have a pretty simple lifestyle but he constantly moans about how we don’t have nice things and he feels constantly stressed about money.

I have gently suggested he get a job again but he gets very defensive saying he’d be throwing away his career. I honestly think he’d be better off back at work not just financially but mental health wise due to having a known income each month. I think he’s made a great go of it but the reality is it’s not working. Thing is I don’t know how to say it to him straight as he’s worked so so hard to make it work and I was the one who persuaded him to go freelance in the first place. I think he’s worried about being seen to have failed to make it work. Also not sure what he’d do as his work is quite niche so not many jobs and he doesn’t want to do anything else. How do I open up dialogue about this without hurting him?

Not sure if it’s relevant but he’s a very involved dad, does a tonne of housework too (more than me 😬) and is generally lovely and takes great care of us ❤️.
