Restoring WhatsApp messages?

Does anyone know how I can restore some deleted WhatsApp messages please?

If you delete the app and then re install it. If the chat has been backed up which it sometimes does automatically at set times. It gives you the option to restore messages when you re load the app. I've done it before and it's brought back messages I'd deleted, because the back up saved before I deleted them.
