OLD. What makes you immediately swipe left?

I may get flamed for some of these, but I'll start:

Tattoos (just not my thing)

Men holding big fish

Men with pictures of what is clearly their ex (or current) wife/girlfriend

Bare chested selfies with urinals in the back ground

Anyone who says "live, laugh, love"

No pictures of them at all, or group pictures

Slightly sinister/psycho sounding profiles

Depends which way you look at it. Is it more worthwhile figuring out online if a guy is nice, smart, funny or by going to the effort and expense of a date to find out a guy is nice, smart and funny?

hellsbellsmelons · 28/01/2019 12:55

also judge men who wear jewellery
Hell yeah me too.
Especially earrings and big chunky necklaces.
WHY???????
There are too many to list really, but it you aren't smiling and showing your teeth, then I aint buying!

LadyandGent · 28/01/2019 13:02

For me it's looks, location and profession.

My personal bugbears are Profession: I have one (wow aren't you smart).

Profile: I'll fill this in later.

Fish for me too lol. Blurry photos. Photos of them too far away to see.

Smaller than 5'7"

Profession: Chef - no thank you.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 28/01/2019 16:23

Never done OLD, but would have to agree with most /all of the horrors listed above. (Except...what's wrong with chefs, as per post above? Makes good food - what's not to like?!)

oiiiiiii · 28/01/2019 16:28

@genieinajar

This is the problem with internet dating. People focus too much on looks rather than shared interests and personalities. You may dismiss someone who is a nice guy, has a good job, is a good father, simply because they've taken a selfie in a bathroom.

Firstly, what do you think folk focus on when they meet someone in a pub? Do people hand out info sheets on themselves in public down where you are? Wink

Are you aware that there is actual data out there that shows that human beings accurately judge all kinds of things about each other based on photographs alone? We are social creatures. We read each other like books, all the time. Scanning photos for clues is a very efficient way to find "your people".
E.g., as you say, "shared interests" are important, sure.
Don't you think if I thought fishing was stupid, it would be best not to date someone who literally chooses a picture of themselves fishing as their representative photo? Does that not show that our interests are not shared??

Is it not massive timewasting to dutifully swipe right on every single man on an app, just in case he meets the bargain basement requirement of "he is nice" or "he is a good dad"? (Are those not basic prices of admission in any case? Do you just have extremely low standards for men so these things are appealing to you specifically?)

It's easy to find nice men and good dads. They're lying around all over the place. What you want is someone who actually fits with you and your quirks. So be picky, save everyone some time.

I met my DP on tinder 3.5 years ago. I was picky as fuck and so was he. It worked wonderfully.

Dontsayyouloveme · 28/01/2019 16:36

Bald heads!

BloodyDisgrace · 28/01/2019 20:35

I'm surprised by the fish photo negativity :) I see such pics as a way to express child-like joy at something innocent (like, look, I've got a big 'un!), and I see it as an attractive quality. it's a kind of man who likes to be among the nature, who is chilled enough to love spending hours being still and doing nothing (now, if you want to start pooping out kids at a speed of light right after you've met, want a house/car/career/fancy holidays just like your reference group, then, true, you want your man to be rabidly active at "achieving" and him "being still" and "doing nothing" is your anathema). A kind of guy who will leave you alone to go and see your friends/ do hobbies etc, rather than always be under your nose. Is it that bad?

Everything else you all said - yes, total turn off.

DanFmDorking · 28/01/2019 20:41

Ok, Ok now, that's enough.
Please post what makes you immediately swipe right?
... and make it clear!
Thanks.

spritesobright · 28/01/2019 20:43

PML on these!!! Too true. But why has no one mentioned the classic "crotch shot" yet?
I admit when I first went on tinder I really was just looking for a shag but I need to see your face!
Also:

  • "director of" when they just mean self-employed
  • pic of themselves with a group of women
  • bankers
  • hints at the sex acts they would like you to perform
I remember a post where he said he wanted a woman who would blow him in the car before walking in to meet his mother! I did eventually meet my bf online and he had 3 humble, underwhelming adjectives about himself and nice eyes in his pics. The post was so totally different than other ones where they desperately wanted to impress that I swiped right.
oiiiiiii · 28/01/2019 20:44

@DanFmDorking

Are you a man? Born before 1983? Because butting into a conversation between women and issuing commands on how it can be changed to meet your requirements, is very man-born-before-1983

oiiiiiii · 28/01/2019 20:45

#notallmenbornbefore1983 obv

NotAColdWomanHenry · 28/01/2019 20:47

Men who like cats :)

NotAColdWomanHenry · 28/01/2019 20:49

I think dan was just wanting to know what women do like to see and being flippant. Maybe.

lightisrightisnight · 28/01/2019 20:49

I hate the "never married no kids" thing they write. I don't care about if they have or haven't, I just think it's an odd thing to write.

Over-preened, eyebrow plucked men.

lightisrightisnight · 28/01/2019 21:02

oh goodness I never realised "open minded" was a euphemism for kinky sex! I've had it on my profile for AGES!!! aaaaahhhhh!!

emilybrontescorsett · 28/01/2019 21:11

I'd rather someone say they have no kids and have never been married.
I've 2 very good friends who married men that fitted that description and they are both very happy.

tierraJ · 28/01/2019 21:29

Photos of them blowing smoke rings & holding pints of beer (one foot in the grave)

Group photos (which one are you??)

Fat men (sorry...)

Drugged tigers (cruel)

Not smiling

Anything that indicates far right views

bringincrazyback · 28/01/2019 21:33

I'm married, but back when I was single and doing OLD, bad spelling was an instant turn-off.

Also, those 'moody' pics guys like to post, that generally make them look like they should be on some sort of register.

spritesobright · 29/01/2019 07:06

lightisrightisnight too funny. When I first went on I put "looking for something casual" (because I was just out of a long term marriage) and got some VERY explicit messages including the charming opener "do you like pussy or ass?" Fffs.

user1479305498 · 29/01/2019 10:37

Thing is though lots of us have Ha or ex Hs and partners who tick all the boxes but still had issues be it cheating, porn, gambling etc , they just hid them for a long time or developed them. I’m sure many women on here would have /have had partners who would be inundated if we just went purely on looks and a good profile, that’s the sad thing

OutPinked · 29/01/2019 12:02

Haven’t been on OLD for a few years since I met DP (on tinder Grin) but I swiped left for anyone with a group photo because I couldn’t tell who they were, anyone with a shit boring bio, anyone in the army, anyone posing with animals that weren’t their pets and anyone that had a photo with their child/ren as their main pic. I didn’t have an issue with them having children because I did too but I don’t understand why you’d put a photo of your child on a dating site, it’s weird.

spritesobright · 29/01/2019 18:49

user that's really true. I came across a friend's ex on Tinder and he came across as charming, fit and together. I remember thinking I would have swiped right if I hadn't known his ex.
In reality he had a coke addiction, had lost his job and was living in his parents' basement.

user1479305498 · 30/01/2019 16:51

Exactly Sprite. I suspect a lot of women (and guys too) who frequent this page would be quite ‘wtf’ if they looked at their ex partner/husband/wife’s new profiles on dating sites and think ‘where’s that mountain climbing/ baking/ devoted to kids’ persona come from !! And who knew a job in a warehouse could be reclassified as logistics manager etc .
