On tinder....I feel like im shopping.
When I do get a match, nobody chats. I have tried chatting first and a hand full appear passive.
Thought I'd try a dating site but can't really afford to pay.
I have heard horror stories about POF. Apparently no good for your self esteem?

I would suggest OKCupid instead. Still free but the personality type questions help to weed out people with diametrically opposed opinions to yours.

datingdisaster41 · 11/07/2018 15:33

I used Pof when I was single and I actually would recommend it but with provisos. It's huge so you will be bombarded and this will include lots of people who you're not attracted to!!! However, there is plenty of choice of people to get chatting to and there are lots of 'normal' people on there. As with all dating sites, there are also lots of errrm, unusual people there too but you learn to weed through the people you're not interested in chatting to. I second OKCupid - it's good, it's just not as busy at Pof. Good luck out there :-)

1sttimeDD · 11/07/2018 15:36

I was a member for about a year, actively chatting for about 6 months. You do have to weed out the creeps and weirdos (as with all free online dating sites) but once I did I met my DP. Expecting our first little one and counting down the days to our wedding! Smile

Goldenbug · 11/07/2018 15:44

Full of freaks and weirdos. And people like you who are not freaks and weirdos. Hmm Just be ruthless in your weeding out.
No photo = avoid.
Uses text speak = avoid.
Wants "discrete" meeting = avoid.
Photo with novelty socks/tie = avoid.
Star Trek posters on wall = avoid.
You can pretty much get rid of 80% of all F&Ws in the first second of reading their profile.

Bubblesandcake · 11/07/2018 15:51

Thanks for the heads up.
1sttimeDD congratulations, that's definitely a happy ever after story. Restoring my hope.
Welcoming more happy stories, especially dating after divorce.

I met my now dh on it but there were a lot of pervs and weirdos to filter out

fantasmasgoria1 · 11/07/2018 16:02

I met my fiancé on a paid site and it wasn’t worth the money as most people wanted a relationship, were more serious and respectful although there were a handful who sent dirty messages! My fiancé has been on pod in the past and his experience was that people just wanted a hook up. That being said we know a couple of people who found relationships from pof.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 11/07/2018 16:04

I met my partner of 5 years on there and 2 friends have met partners on there 1 happily married and one engaged....... you need to weed out the creepy frogs to find the princes but it worked for us

surlycurly · 11/07/2018 16:06

Another one who spent a lot of time weeding out the weirdos. I mainly used it for sex to be honest. That said, I met my partner there a couple of years ago and we haven't looked back since. I would also recommend OKCupid as it's a better bet if you want a relationship. Good luck

MissCherryCakeyBun · 11/07/2018 16:11

We are both over 40's ( okay so I'm 49Grin) and both divorcees with kids in their early 20's our friends are also all divorcees around the same age so yep it works for all. Just use common sense and be honest and use honest photos too and be kind and say no thanks to those that contact you that you're not interested in. Block the weirdos and freaks and have fun

isseywithcats · 11/07/2018 16:11

i met my Oh on POF and yes i had to wade through the weirdos (cross dresser) ( man who likes to come and be your maid for the day) guys a lot older, the younger ones after a cougar situation etc, but there are some nice ordinary guys on there too, its like anything where numbers are concerned some you will like, some you wont, some will like you some wont, i got fed up of the ones who just wanted to chat, waste of my time, so i put on my profile that i wasnt interested in guys hiding in their mancaves , if they wanted to meet then do it dont just talk for 3 months, look at their interests and if they are into say fishing and football and that bores you to tears then dont bother with them, not worth the effort, if you dont want a guy with kids or do ignore or message, a few of them put a career or job down and when you meet them have health problems and dont work any more, i soon got shot of them because i wanted an equal relationship where both partners work

rachy22 · 11/07/2018 16:20

Hi, I used both pof and okcupid, definitely preferred the later, but mostly similar experience to all past posters, just have to wade through.
I really didn't like the idea of tinder, but my friend insisted on signing me up and I actually met my DP on there and we now have a beautiful 6month old daughter. So you really never know what's going to happen (though we are younger, don't know if that makes a difference... 🤷‍♀️

rachy22 · 11/07/2018 16:20

I also know 2 other success stories from okcupid - both getting married later this year

MrsXx4 · 11/07/2018 16:23

I met my husband on POF. You may find you get a lot of strange messages and time wasters but sometimes you get lucky. We have been together 5 years and are expecting our first baby.

purplelass · 11/07/2018 16:30

I met my fella on there 2 1/2 years ago and we're still together now!

I'd say that you've got the right idea - chat loads online before you meet IRL so you know if there's a connection.

Good luck!

Makeuplover43 · 11/07/2018 16:34

I joined POF about two months ago as I wanted to start OLD. I thought this would be a good place to start as it was free and would give me an idea of what’s involved. I’m now almost at the point of deleting my account it’s so disappointing. As previous people have said, you will be bombarded with attention. Avoid those without photos at all costs, I think that’s highly dodgy imo....probably married. I’m 43 and have had many younger guys showing an interest. Not sure if it’s genuine or they just think it’s funny making an older woman feel flattered receiving attention from a younger man.
It’s easy to weed out the rubbish, just set your standards and stick to them. Too many messages start off focusing on my physical appearance and often in a less than subtle way....I delete them straight away. If that’s what they’re focused on they probably have no intention of wanting to get to know me as a person. I always like those who mention something from what I’ve written on my profile, it shows they’ve actually bothered to look at it properly, not just the photos.
I’ve also joined Match.com and paid a monthly subscription and have to say that I think the men on there are generally more what I’m after, ie someone who’s respectful and looking for a potential relationship rather than a quick hook up for sex.
Anyway, hope that helps, happy hunting!

Dowser · 11/07/2018 18:04

Ten years ago I met my husband on POF
We’ve been marri d for 3 years on Saturday
Still good!
We were mid 50s then, now old and creaky... and cranky

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 11/07/2018 18:06

POF = Plenty of Fucks

Newmum102 · 11/07/2018 18:09

Had Tinder & POF. Had a few short lived things from POF before meeting my now DH. We’ve been together 4.5 years and have a 1 year old. So yeah there are some good ones on it :)

BurpeesAreTheWorkOfTheDevil · 11/07/2018 18:16

It worked well for my ex.

Shame he wasnt single yetAngry

Bubblesandcake · 11/07/2018 19:12

Some lovely stories, thankyou.
Joined both.
Okcupid - it says I have like but when I click on the icon, it says to pay? Is it free to message?
Oh dear POF! That is going to be interesting!

I met dp on pof. Second conversation, first date. Within a month of going on. Obviously I think it's fab. Less sleazy guys looking for one night stands, in my ( limited) experience.

moose234 · 11/07/2018 19:25

I met my now husband 4 years ago on pof, we have been married 9 months and have a 2 week baby girl!

socraties1234 · 11/07/2018 19:37

userabcname · 11/07/2018 19:40
