my dh & i have 1 child and are trying to cut back a bit on our weekly shop after a few expensive months which have caught up with us. We currently spend about £65 a week & maybe a bit extra for things we've ran out of from local shop.(making a start having one less bottle of wine a week)

Just wondered what other people spend on their weekly shops and any tips on where we could cut back please before dh has a fit!

I try and keep it under £100

menu planning and eating less meat and less alochol really cuts bills.

Idreamofdaleks · 11/05/2007 18:22

I am on a diet with no alcohol which has saved money

But high protein which is costing a fortune!

NoodleStroodle · 11/05/2007 18:22

It's creeping to £150...eeuch

WinkyWinkola · 11/05/2007 18:23

For some reason, it's £105 per week for me, DH, DS, DD (breastfed so probably about £20 of extra groceries for me alone!) and three cats. Can't really understand why it's so much.. .. .. ..

MrsCarrot · 11/05/2007 18:25

I like to think it's £100, but it's more like £150 with all the little extras at the local shops, that really adds up.

PinkTulips · 11/05/2007 18:30

me, dp, dd (2), ds (9 months) and a cat and we spend about 100 euros (69 pounds) in the supermarket and health shop (allergies so need special foods) and go through another 50 euros or so during the week on petrol, things we've run out of and tobacco for dp (he cut down to tobacco from fags to save money)

charliecat · 11/05/2007 18:30

£60, £40 on main shop and £20 for top ups through the week.

loobylooby · 11/05/2007 18:32

Its generally about £135 week with 3 bottles of wine and an average amount of meat & fish (2 adults and two children under 5) and perhaps one visit to the shops in the week to buy some milk. Most of my friends seem to spend much less than this, but if I cut out the wine altogether it would still be about £115 - can't work out why it is more than others - shop in Sainsburys btw (add £20 if Waitrose and ethically can't do Tescos)

Cappuccino · 11/05/2007 18:33

about 75 ish

buy wine online separately though

but the 75 includes beer

honeybrown · 11/05/2007 18:38

Also around £130 and can't understand how it has reached this much for 2 adults, 2 under 5's and a cat. Time to start menu planning methinks!

munz · 11/05/2007 18:38

I have 1 DS, me and DH, we do one big shop at hte start of the month to incl nappies and soap powder etc. is normally around £85 ish. then £30 in the butcher for a month's meat. and weekly shop is normally around £40-£50 ish works out around £60 p/w i'm aiming for £50! lol - honeslty!

this is without any booze thou and toiletries etc as I buy those out of my avon money.

Mercy · 11/05/2007 18:39

We are a family of 4 and spend approx. £80 - £120 every week to ten days. This includes alcohol and nappies (but both are being cut back atm!)

Agree that menu planning, even for part of the week, can help reduce costs. I have noticed over the last few months that food prices have slowly crept up - bread, meat etc. Apparently egg prices will start to increase soon.

munz · 11/05/2007 18:40

DH doesn't beleive me that the foods gone up so much - there was a time when £150 would feed the 3 of us for a month. (althou DS's nappies ahve gone up as he's got bigger! lol)

manictreecreature · 11/05/2007 18:41

2 adults, 2 school age kids and a cat. I aim for 80, usually manage around 100
If it's less than 100 I can guarantee I will have to go out and buy more food at some point....or, erm wine

All 4 of us have packed lunches and I menu plan and cook from scratch but I cannot get it any lower.

twinkleinthesky · 11/05/2007 18:41

at you Charliecat. How do you do it so low?

About £110-£130 a week for 5 of us and a cat.

manictreecreature · 11/05/2007 18:42

I could do it even cheaper if my children were not such picky freaks

twinkleinthesky · 11/05/2007 18:42

and neither of us drink or smoke...... dont buy loads of junk...

we all eat heaps of fruit though which isnt cheap....

iwouldgoouttonight · 11/05/2007 20:05

Our weekly shop (for me, DP and DS 9 months) has suddenly gone up from about £60 a week to about £80 - no idea why! When I want to cut back I do my shopping online - stops me being tempted by extra things I pass in the supermarket (and you can see how much its going to be before you get to the checkout).

filthymindedvixen · 11/05/2007 20:07

doh, now I'm singing Smiths

luciemule · 11/05/2007 20:08

About 100 on me, DH and DCs. That's with no alcohol as we don't drink.
But I spend a lot elss if I go to the smaller Tesco, rather than Extra. Also, shopping online always workd out cheaper without the lure of the nicely adorned aisles!!!
Even though we spend a lot on food, I never seem to have a meal to put together!

Hilllary · 11/05/2007 20:09

about £140 a week although most of it is my dd's.

QueenofBleach · 11/05/2007 20:10

was spending ridiculous amounts but the last shop was £95 which will do for two weeks plus probably about £20 on top ups, menu planning has made a massive difference and has cut wastage

popsycal · 11/05/2007 20:22

70-80 a week inclkudiing nappies, packed lunches, alcohol

popsycal · 11/05/2007 20:22

that also inclkudes though several 2 for 1 offers, multiple buys of stuff like tinned tomatoes (tend to do online shop every fortnight and lesser shop in between)

cathcart · 11/05/2007 20:24

about £50 a week on average.
