Would you life model?

My husband life models for an all male art group. The artist pays him £85 from 1pm to 3.30pm. They are looking for a female model I am tempted but not sure it’s an excellent fee. Would you do it.

I wouldn't but I was an art student and spent a lot of time drawing models to whom I was very, very grateful. Some of them I knew socially but we never referred to it and it never felt awkward (on my part anyway). In fact I really admired the models confidence. Also, one of the most interesting models to draw was an older lady who was not stick thin so if you have an interesting body I say Go for it!

evilharpy · 07/04/2018 12:51

I personally wouldn't for various reasons (mostly physical) but I have done life drawing and enjoyed it very much. The models I chatted to all said that holding poses is very physically demanding, especially long poses. I wouldn't be capable of it.

Herja · 07/04/2018 12:52

Definitely! I don't like my body very much, but I have no shame. Actually, I might keep an eye out for it. It's not something that I'd thought of, sounds like pretty easy money. I'd like to see how other people saw me too.

poddige · 07/04/2018 12:53

I used to do it (which DH finds bizarre - but it's only a body. We've all got one)

I don't have any art skills whatsoever, so enjoyed that in a roundabout way I contributed to someone's skill/passion.

Occasionally I'd be given a sketch of me too which I've treasured (especially the ones done before DC came 😂)

Everyone is very grateful and the hardest part is staying still.

Ohyesiam · 07/04/2018 12:55

I used to life model at st martins. All very civilised, I’d go for it.

starsandstuff · 07/04/2018 12:55

If anyone wanted to give me money to draw my lumpy arse I'd jump at it Grin

Phillipa12 · 07/04/2018 13:04

My best friends mum is a life model, i have drawn her, her daughter has drawn her, she also has some amazing pictures of her naked hanging in her house, she is a mum of 4 and a grandma to 2, i dont treat her any differently even if we were having a chat whilst she was starkers. Go for it, anyone drawing you is only concentrating on your form and there is absolutely nothing sexual about it.

Fuckingitupforfree · 07/04/2018 13:07

How is £85 for 2.5 hours standing/sitting/lying still not a good fee?

Bluntness100 · 07/04/2018 13:09

Personally I would feel very uncomfortable being the only totally naked person in a room full of strangers who were fully clothed and who then spent the next few hours staring at my naked body. So no I wouldn't do it. However others are fully comfortable with the idea as witnessed by this thread, so it really depends on yout own feelings.

I'm actually not remotely inhibited about my body, but this isn't something I would be comfortable with at all.

Bluntness100 · 07/04/2018 13:11

Well it wouldn't be a good enough fee for me to stand there naked in front of a bunch of clothed strangers.

trikama · 07/04/2018 13:18

I used to do it. I'm very comfortable with my body, and I studied art so I have an eye for what works well in terms of poses. I know how important life drawing is to artists and although it's never completely detached from the sexual nature of nudity, the artists will focus mostly on the form and technical challenges.

It can be very hard work - it's not just sitting/lying around but sometimes holding challenging poses for a very long time without moving an inch, occupying your mind without it showing in your expression, and coming up with your own poses sometimes as well.

Teacuphiccup · 07/04/2018 13:21

Ive done this and it’s good fun.

The only downside is seeing the drawings after, don’t do it if you have thin skin they’re not out to flatter you 😂
I once had a woman really go to town on my cellulite because she ‘loved textures’.

It’s hard work staying still you have to quite strong.

Good money though.

Fuckingitupforfree · 07/04/2018 13:24

I've done it - and for free as a favour! If you aren't comfortable naked in front of strangers then the money doesn't make a difference Bluntness but OP sounds like she would be comfortable doing that but doesn't think £34 per hour is a good fee.

RGNstaffnurse · 07/04/2018 15:19

Yes I think I will do it I have no hang-ups my husband has modelled for over 20 years he said it can be hard work staying still. The fee is very. good after my husband has paid the tax on it at the end of the year his modelling pays for our Christmas and the years council tax. It’s interesting to read those of you who have. The group my husband models for only book ‘smooth’ models, I have a few humps and bumps but smooth otherwise.

DairyisClosed · 07/04/2018 15:21

No. It's not exactly easy, standing still for so long would be a bit of a metal trail for me.

FancyNewBeesly · 07/04/2018 15:24

An all male group who only book “smooth” models? Eek. No thanks.

myrtlehuckingfuge · 07/04/2018 15:27

I did it while I was at Uni. Being a size 16 meant I got more work than my skinnier housemates. Great fun and got an amazing portrait in oils out of it too. The pay wasn't as good though.

ScreamingValenta · 07/04/2018 15:33

Yes - my saggy old body would probably be quite interesting to draw - certainly lots of texture Grin. I wouldn't be in a rush to see the pictures, afterwards, though.

RGNstaffnurse · 07/04/2018 15:43

I think when I said smooth the artist does not want very hairy bodies especially on men. He is married with 5 kids so it’s not anything to worry about. Fancynewbeesty.

I would love to! 4DC but slim, fit and relatively toned, body confident and think I’d be good at holding a pose for prolonged period.

Aquamarine1029 · 07/04/2018 16:23

If you are comfortable with it, then do it!

Wherearemymarbles · 07/04/2018 16:31

I did it at uni and a bit when I left. But being a fidget staying still wasnt easy.

Being naked in front of loads of clothed people was daunting the 1st time but naked in front of a very attractive female artist when just the 2 of us required some will power! (Im male)

evilharpy · 07/04/2018 17:10

Helenajustina fair play to you, but you definitely do not need to be slim/toned to be a life model. In the class I went to the consensus was the more rolls and lumps and bumps the better.

Fuckingitupforfree · 07/04/2018 17:22

Wherearemymarbles - Required what willpower?

ForalltheSaints · 07/04/2018 18:00

Not for me, even though I am OK with being naked with strangers in a sauna or steam room.
