Potential date referring to two people on First Dates as 'bummers'

Convo with this guy on POF. Gone well so far. Just discussing our mutual enjoyment of First Dates and he says do I remember the episode when the 'two bummers ate the snail shells'.

So I said 'who did what?'.

He then changed it to 'the gay couple'.

That's strike 1 for him.

I just thought moron meant stupid? Learn something new every day...

hoolabaybee · 03/01/2017 00:19

Eh???? Why was it wrong to say moron? In my world it just means idiot !Hmm

YoScienceBitch · 03/01/2017 00:23

I've only ever heard most words to be offensive in mumsnet tbh bit in RL.

YoScienceBitch · 03/01/2017 00:23

Not*

MyWhatICallNameChange · 03/01/2017 00:24

Idiot and stupid were both used as descriptors for people with learning disabilities, yet people use those words all the time. Moron means the same thing, yet we can't use it?

I can't say I particularly like any of the words, but I see no problem with people using them to describe fools like the man in the OP, or the OP saying she isn't one.

I have never heard anyone in real life be offended by the word moron, it just seems to be on mumsnet.

TheresABluebirdOnMyShoulder · 03/01/2017 00:29

Never heard of anyone finding "moron" offensive before. Certainly isn't round my neck of the woods anyway. Or actually any of the places I've ever lived. I wouldn't bat an eyelid at this, any more than the word "idiot".

TheDinnerWitch · 03/01/2017 00:29

Wow, just to butt in, but I never knew it was THAT bad to use the word 'moron'... Confused

TheDinnerWitch · 03/01/2017 00:30

In my part of the world, it's just as 'offensive' (i.e. not really at all) to call some 'idiot'

Ohdearducks · 03/01/2017 00:37

Another one who thought moron was another word for idiot or stupid. Confused

OvariesForgotHerPassword · 03/01/2017 00:39

Moron is Welsh for carrot.

Sounds a delight OP, don't blame you for kicking him to the curb!

MyWhatICallNameChange · 03/01/2017 00:57

Well, it's not nice to call people names, and I'd certainly tell my kids off (and do) if they use them to each other, but I really fail to see how moron is so unacceptable when idiot was used in the same way for labelling people with learning disabilities and no one comes storming on to posts whenever someone calls someone an idiot.

An idiot was some one with an IQ between 0-25, an imbecile (another word which I don't think people get so offended about) had an IQ between 26-50, and a moron between 51-70.

So actually idiot is worse insult than a moron. But moron is always the word that's picked up on?

Joinourclub · 03/01/2017 01:16

Big fat, Family Fortunes style,'ERR URR' for me.

Pollyanna9 · 03/01/2017 14:09

Thanks Ovaries!

I have NEVER heard that moron was that type of word although to be fair, I wasn't calling anyone else it!

You never can tell where a thread is gonna go can you....
