Surprise pregnancy at a ripe old age...scared

GoodGawdAlmighty · 30/03/2016 21:56

Period is a few days late. Felt nauseous this morning, so decided to do a test, thinking 'this is very very unlikely...but I do feel a bit weird...so...'

Anyway, it was positive. No contraceptive failure that we knew of, but obviously there has been.

I'm 39. DH is 51. Our DC are 12 and 8. We had definitely decided we didn't want any more children after DC2 was born. DH had been looking into getting the snip. God, we are both old. Well, DH is old (sorry Grin).... Yet after the initial shock this morning, I feel strangely happy and excited.

Are we too old? Am I mad to be feeling a bit crazily excited? Can I do this to my old geezer? Seriously...need some words of wisdom, as my head is spinning.

I was your age when I had my last dc. Congratulations Flowers

Dowser · 31/03/2016 21:45

My youngest grandson was born to my dil when she was 40....almost.

Fraggleyourock · 01/04/2016 20:39

A friend of mine just had her little girl and she is your age! An accidental second pregnancy 21 years after her last was born! She and her DH are absolutely loving every second of it and say that they both have more patience for it than they did with their first. It will be an amazing adventure for you all! Congratulations!! Thanks

Fraggleyourock · 01/04/2016 20:40

Oh, and how did DH take it?

SoConfused15 · 01/04/2016 21:03

I've been much more relaxed with DC3 as I realised the things u obsess over just don't make that much difference in the long run.

SecretsAndStuff21 · 01/04/2016 21:34

I was 39 when I had mine after many miscarriages. Know loads of women who've had babies past their mid forties without any medical intervention,
You are not too old at all.

Notmycircusnotmymonkeys · 01/04/2016 21:47

Ripe old age. I'm bloody offended. had my boy at 40. No probs at all. Keeps you young by the way.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/04/2016 22:01

This thread is stressing me out a bit. Conceived DC4 very easily at 41. At 51 my periods are still like clockwork. We have ditched contraception in the last couple of months, maybe we've been a bit hasty.

RealityCheque · 01/04/2016 22:43

Tinkly - what a bizarre decision! Hmm

JadziaSnax · 01/04/2016 22:49

I was 39 when dd was born, DH was 49. She's 3 now and fabulous. Pffft to being too old. 😉

Congratulations Flowers

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/04/2016 22:49

In what way bizzarre Reality? I don't mean I'm trying for a baby. I mean that I thought I was safely past all that, but now, reading about people getting surprises at 53 I'm a bit concerned about getting caught out.

CrazyMary · 01/04/2016 22:57

You're only 39, that's hardly old in today's world for having babies. Dh was telling me about a 53 year old woman being pregnant recently. Personally, I would not fancy facing in to having a baby and sleepless nights again in my 50's but good for her and her OH

CrazyMary · 01/04/2016 23:03

Tinkly that's a huge gamble even at 51, if you are still having regular periods.
Op, I know a few men who were 'older' when they had dc, they are great dads. It will probably come as a shock to your dh but he will come round.

BustingOut · 01/04/2016 23:05

Had our 5th aged 41, best thing we ever done Smile

whattheseithakasmean · 01/04/2016 23:09

Tinkly at 48, personally I would take no risks. I would fully expect to get pregnant without contraception. Pre menopause, why would you think otherwise?

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/04/2016 23:16

I dunno ladies, I honestly assumed that at 51 there was no chance, or just like a total one in a billion chance. I don't know anyone older than early forties who has got pregnant naturally, and I know a lot of older mothers.

MargotLovedTom · 01/04/2016 23:18

Tinkly what Reality means is that, unless you are trying to become pregnant, it's bizarre to stop using contraception if you're still ovulating.

MargotLovedTom · 01/04/2016 23:19

Oh, should've refreshed before I posted!

BYOSnowman · 01/04/2016 23:19

If you are having regular periods you are still able to conceive

You won't know a lot of women who have conceived in their fifties because they are either using contraception or menopausal

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/04/2016 23:24

Nooooo! I do not want to hear this. So nice not using contraception. Roll on the flipping menopause.

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 01/04/2016 23:35

Why would anyone think for a minute if they were still having periods they wouldn't need to use contraception? Confused

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/04/2016 23:38

Well I have had a bit of a Google and the chances of getting pregnant over 45 are vanishingly tiny. However I will not be taking any more chances.

BYOSnowman · 01/04/2016 23:53

But those statistics are skewed by the number of women going through the menopause and the number of women who don't want to get pregnant over 45 and use contraception

You want to be googling the statistic of how many women over the age of 45 who are still ovulating and having regular unprotected sex fall pregnant

I'm guessing that study hasn't been done

ittooshallpass · 02/04/2016 07:28

I had my surprise first (and only) baby at 42. My DD is the best thing that ever happened to me.

I was worried about how I'd cope, but I've loved every minute. Being an older mum is great. I've lived my life, so don't feel tied down. She'll be 18 and going off to uni just as I retire. Perfect timing, lol...

Congratulations OP. What did you DH say?!

allnewredfairy · 02/04/2016 08:27

Congratulions OP however I would give your DH plenty of time to get his head round this one. It's a biggie! Flowers
